Choosing the right officiant is an important decision. Below are some questions to consider asking a prospective officiant that will help ensure your wedding ceremony runs smoothly and stress-free!
1. How many weddings have you officiated?..Hiring someone with zero experience can negatively impact your ceremony. The more experience your officiant has, the smoother it’ll go.
2. What type of weddings have you officiated?..Does the officiant specialize in traditional ceremonies, or can they conduct ceremonies more suited to you and your partner’s individual interests?
3. Are you available for the rehearsal?..To make sure your ceremony goes smoothly, it’s important to hold a rehearsal with all the leading players involved.
4. Will you handle filing the marriage license for us?..Your officiant should offer this as part of their service. You can choose to file yourself, however.
5. How much do you charge?..You should find out the cost for the wedding ceremony and also for the rehearsal, which is often an additional cost.
6. Do you have a backup in case of an emergency?..While never planned, things happen. If something gets in the way, it’s always advisable to have a plan B in place.
7. Can we meet ahead of time to go over logistics?..The more connection you make with your officiant before your wedding day, the more comfortable you'll be. If they can’t make themselves available to meet beforehand to discuss the ceremony, you may want to consider moving on.
8. What time will you arrive at the ceremony?..Ensure the officiant arrives at least 30 minutes before your ceremony. You already have enough stress on your plate, so why add on the burden of not knowing when the officiant will be there?
9. Can you help us with our vows?..Sometimes it's helpful to have some guidance with writing vows. It’s not out of a lack of love, it’s the high pressure of putting into words how much your partner means to you. Your officiant can offer that guidance.
10. Are you okay with us making changes to the ceremony script?..It’s essential to know if your officiant can be flexible. As this is your wedding ceremony, it's appropriate for you to have a say in what is included.
11. What will you wear on our wedding day?..Your officiant should seamlessly blend in with your color palate and theme. You can certainly be specific about this.
12. What questions do you have for us?..The more your wedding officiant knows about you, the easier it’ll be for them to craft the words that will marry you!
