Carlton Ward Jr. | @carltonward of Wildpath | @wildpath & Path of the Panther | @pathofthepanther joined our founder Tony Cho | @_tonycho_ earlier this year in the Future of Cities | @focities podcast studio to discuss the importance of land conversation throughout the state of Florida as well as the impacts of urban and suburban sprawl on our natural ecosystems which includes the habitats of our stateās emblem species, the Florida panther. Over the next decade Carlton is committed to conserving 1 million acres of the Florida wildlife corridor by 2030 and weāve joined him in this mission.
What is the Florida wildlife corridor?
āThe #floridawildlifecorridor covers nearly 17.7 million acres of Florida. 9.6 million acres of the Corridor are existing conserved lands, or 54% of the Corridor. 8.1 million acres of the Corridor are considered as opportunity areas for future conservation, or 46% of the Corridor. Urban sprawl is projected to consume 5 millions acres of habitat by 2070. Floridaās population grows by 1,000 people per day. That equates to one million people every three years. Catering to this rapid growth, new developments are built where wildlife habitat once existed. This results in islands of habitat and wildlife populations separated by roads and suburbs. Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death for Florida panthers. Nearly 30 individuals are killed every year.ā

A huge moment in these efforts culminated at the end of September as it was announced that the Path of the Panther has won an Emmy for Outstanding Nature Documentary!
