The “Miami Reef Star” will soon be deployed as an underwater sculptural art installation by Carlos Betancourt & Alberto Latorre, commissioned by The Reefline. This hybrid reef is a blend of art, architecture, and environmental science that will create a vibrant marine ecosystem off the coast of Miami Beach.

The structural design, with its jagged textures and strategically placed openings, provides an ideal habitat for marine organisms. These features mimic the natural environment, offering crevices for smaller creatures to inhabit and openings that allow light to pe*****te, supporting a healthy internal ecosystem. The “Coral Lok” mechanism is an innovative approach to facilitating coral planting, enhancing the sculptures’ role as a thriving reef. These 3D printed prototypes integrate art with ecological function, using environmentally friendly extrudable and 3D printed concrete technology to ensure that the sculptures are conducive to marine life growth.

Meet the all-star team behind this project: and be sure to visit the Miami Reef Star this Art Week in Miami Beach between 36-37 streets. from Dec. 2-8, 2024.

In a world striving for sustainable solutions, it’s time to rethink how we use the resources we already have in abundance. Sugarcane is the largest crop in the world and offers a unique opportunity for transformation. After extracting its juice for sugar, ethanol or alcohol, one-third of the plant’s mass remains. This fibrous waste—known as bagasse—is often burned or left to rot, releasing greenhouse gasses and contributing to climate change. But what if we could turn this waste into valuable, lasting materials?

Join in The Gallery at in this 2-day workshop as we explore how to upcycle sugarcane bagasse—sourced directly from local Miami restaurants and juice stands—into new, unexpected materials and artistic creations. We will dive into the world of bio-based materials and discover how they can contribute to building a circular economy.
