Lately I have been seeing a lot of pricing transparency posts....and yes, I've done a few myself. But, I have some thoughts on this topic. So, if you are planning a wedding or an event take a moment to read.

Pricing varies depending on the location you are in.

Contrary to seemingly popular belief flowers from a local flower farmer (not hobby grower; a true business) are not going to be less expensive.

Pricing includes covering the business owners costs and making a living. Not just the flowers themselves. So each person prices a bit different based on their own needs.

Yes, there is a standard pricing formula but again, every business owner bases their pricing on their own needs.

So in summary, pricing transparency posts are great but they are not the industry norm and should not be treated as such.

Oh and faux flowers and real flowers are not priced the same. Faux rentals are possible and great if that's the route you'd like for your wedding. In my option fresh is always better πŸ˜‰.

Peonies. Everyone loves them. We wait all spring for them to bloom. But they require patience.
Peony plants are an investment. Some varieties costing a hundred dollars or more for just 1 bare root!

In their first year they may or may not flower. I always say "first they sleep, second they creep, third they leap!".

And I never harvest off new plants until their 4th or even 5th year.
Why do I wait so long? Well, that's because I want healthy plants that continue to produce large blooms. Even once I start harvesting off a plant I will only take about a 3rd of the blooms.

Last fall I planted 50 bare roots, all but 1 came up this spring, they all look healthy with great leaf growth. Ill out 50 more in this fall and that will be enough. If properly cared for they will produce for many many years.

Pictured are peonies in their 2nd (picture 1) and 3rd year (picture 2).

In memory of a beloved husband, father, grandfather and farmer. He loved John Deere tractors, was a pillar in the Agricultural Community, FFA alumni and loved by so many.

I rarely share funeral or memorial work. It is personal and deeply emotional work.

It's always an honor to design the pieces that represent someone who is no longer earthly. And while I am always proud of those arrangements, I will photograph them and keep those final memories between myself and the family who entrusted me with the creation.

I remember all of the funerals I have ever designed for. The women who loved pink carnations and stargazer lilies, the gentleman who was a proud American, the hunter and the fisherman, the man who loved gardening (I used tomatoes in his!) the young lady who wrote a book before her 18th birthday and touched more lives than she will ever know. The village matriarch who silently left her mark on every street corner. They all stay with me.

I am sharing this arrangement with permission from the family. Thank you to the Jaycox family for the gift of designing for one of your hardest days.
