This is probably going to be my most controversial post ever......

Here it goes...

I am NOT "doing" Valentine's Day anymore! Phew, it feels good to say that. It was a giant weight off my shoulders once I decided not to offer Valentine's Day flowers any longer.

I'm sure you're all wondering why. It is very simple, really, it is STRESSFUL! In the past, I have spent thousands and thousands to make sure I had the right amount of flowers, enough vases, enough help, and extra delivery people. Worked well into the night and extremely early in the morning. I'd lose sleep wondering if I was even going to break even that year. That no longer lines up with what I want for myself or my business moving forward.

Lots of people will say, "You have to. You're a florist." Yes, I am a florist, but it does not mean I need to stray from what makes me happy and peaceful. The competition with inexpensive and poorly designed flowers is not worth the stress. Walmart, gas stations, and places that never sell flowers any other day of the year suddenly are flower shops. It's not worth the stress.

I still love you all and wish you the best Valentine's Day. Support one of the other local florists for your Valentine flowers this year.

My social media posts have looked a little different lately, and I'm going to tell you why that is.

Well, in the effort to find myself again in 2025, I figured the best way to go about that is to put more of myself on my social media platform.

Yes, I could have a personal one, but it's so much work to post and be present online! Additionally, I literally am Farmhouse Floral Design. It's an extension of me. It is the dream I brought to life, with the help and continuous support of family and friends.

Also, this is my way of reminding "everyone" that behind small businesses are real humans with families and lives outside the work space.

And in case you were wondering when holding piglets, you will probably get pooped on. Fortunately, I was wearing my sisters sweatshirt. 🤣

It does, however, apply to social media. Specifically, your social media following.

Followers do NOT equal sales! And they do NOT determine your worth or success!

If you saw my post yesterday, you probably picked up on the word "success." Success looks different for everyone.
Success for me is time. It's time to do all the "mom things." Grow what I want. Pick the events I say yes to. It's space and freedom to design and be creative.

I know I am successful. I want to be more successful in 2025. Not in ways most think. I want to design more freely. I want to grow more of our food. I want to be successful in a slower time.

Want to know a secret?

Having a retail shop did NOT make my business more successful 🙃.

There, I said it. It's true. Several years ago, I thought I needed to have a storefront to be a successful florist. I went from a home studio with minimal overhead to jumping in head first to a traditional retail shop. And I have learned a lot (still am)!

Things I have learned
1. My flowers are designed just as beautifully regardless of where I am.
2. No matter how well you plan, you won't sell everything.
3. Days are unpredictable.
4. It's alright to say "No."
5. Bigger does NOT equal better.
6. Time is money, and it's a costly one.
7. Retail doesn't equal higher profit (in fact, just the opposite)
8. A home studio with my gardens, animals, and family all around me is where I truly want to be.

Now, this isn't to discourage anyone who is in retail or looking to start a retail shop. This is my own personal experience.

So, follow along if you want to see how I take 2025 to reestablish my success as a farmer florist.

One of the hardest things for me is keeping up with social media. I go through spurts of posting daily and sharing multiple stories. I attempt to create reels and videos. Honestly, it is a lot, and the last thing I think of when going through the" to-do list."
I am not making it a New Years resolution to post more either, mostly because I don't care to. I don't want to be an influencer or Instagram famous. I post when I have the brain space to do so and have created something I'm excited about.
So, here is a picture of an arrangement I'm proud of. I was given a full artistic license by the client, and she loved it! Maybe I will make it a resolution to share more of the joy that flowers bring me......
