After stage managing and producing over 30 OCM productions, Executive Producer Mary Longey knows a thing or two about opera. Her favorite? OCM's production of Eugene Onegin in 2013. Check out this video from our production!

"After spending over 20 years stage managing and producing over 30 productions for OCM, my favorite opera experience has got to be Tchaikovsky's EUGENE ONEGIN in 2013, because it was in Russian, starred my favorite OCM soprano Suzanne Kantorski, and (besides being simply one of the most beautiful opera scores), I loved the look of our production - the costumes, the set, all of the details of props and furniture and dancing that made it incredible to watch every night. Tatiana's letter aria is one of the longest in opera, but I still love listening to it over and over! I saw the Bolshoi production of the opera at the Metropolitan Opera when I was studying Russian in College, and I never forgot it. So I was very happy when Doug Anderson decided that OCM could produce it in 2012." - Mary

Next up: OCM Chorus Master Nathaniel Lew shares his unforgettable first encounter with Britten's Peter Grimes!

"One opera that I fell in love with instantly at a young age is Britten's Peter Grimes. I knew only a few of Britten's works when, in my sophomore year of college, a roommate brought back Britten's 1958 recording of Peter Grimes and put it on our stereo. I was entranced, rendered literally immobile for the entire recording. By the end, as the chorus returned singing the music that began Act One, unmoved and unchanged by the tragedy that they have precipitated, I was crying (or almost). That chance encounter sparked a life-long passion for Britten's operas. To this day, not only Peter Grimes, but also Billy Budd, The Turn of the Screw, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Death in Venice remain some of my most cherished operatic touchstones, and my most memorable theatrical memories. Here's a clip of the terrifying mob scene. - Nat

More from Benjamin Britten's masterpiece. I love how she whips the entire borough into a frenzy.

This Saturday is World Opera Day! All week, we're celebrating by sharing our staff's favorite opera moments—the experiences that made us fall in love with this art form. First up: OCM General Director Sarah Cullins takes us back to row G at the Met.

"My first live opera experience was seeing La Traviata at the Met with my grandmother when I was about 13. My great-aunt Loulu had a lifelong subscription in row G, seats 5 and 7 (carried over from the old Met), but hardly ever used them in her later years, leaving me the incredibly lucky beneficiary of those seats on many occasions. Over the years, my grandmother and I saw Aida countless times together, and I'll never forget an absolutely incredible Don Carlos that I saw with a college friend after taking the train down from Boston. The first time OCM produced La Traviata, a semi-staged version in 2014, I sang Annina, and wished every moment that my grandmother could have seen me. Now that OCM will be producing our first fully staged version in Spring 2026, the cycle comes full circle for me, now as General Director, to be responsible for bringing this incredible experience to audiences young and old. My favorite Violetta? One I never got to hear perform live, Callas." - Sarah
