It is time again for Plant of the Week! This week we have an employee choice by Dawn. Anthuriums are sometimes called flamingo flowers because of their bright colors. Dawn says, “I love these plants because of their unique, long-lasting blooms.”

Many anthurium plants are epiphytic in nature, meaning they grow on other plants. They sometimes develop aerial roots which can be supported with a trellis. Their colorful blooms are actually modified leaves called spathes, which are commonly red but can come in a variety of colors.

Anthuriums thrive in relatively humid environments with bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun as it can scorch the plant. Place in a well-draining potting soil and water when the soil has dried halfway down. Blooms can last for several months, but once they have faded, remove the entire flower stalk with sharp, clean shears to encourage reblooming.

The anthurium pictured is available in the shop for $35, including the decorative pot. Stop in to see it yourself along with our wide selection of other houseplants, and check back soon for more plant facts and care tips. Have a beautiful day!

Happy Tuesday! This week’s Plant of the Week is an employee choice by Brendan. The Aralia Balfour is native to tropical regions of Asia and South America and can reach 7-12 ft tall in nature and 4-6 ft tall as a houseplant. The variegated version pictured here has round, green leaves with ruffled, cream colored edges. Brendan says, “my favorite thing about the Aralia Balfour is they smell nice, like you’re baking something with warm spices.”

Aralia Balfours require bright, indirect light, relatively high humidity, and well-draining potting soil. They have fine roots and are sensitive to overwatering, so be sure to check your plant before you give it a drink. Prune the tips of an Aralia as needed to keep the plant full and reach the desired shape and size. These plants are considered poisonous and should be kept away from pets and children.

Our variegated Aralia Balfours start at $29. If you’re looking for a more mature plant, check out the Aralia and other large indoor trees in the back of Greenhouse 1. We hope to see you soon!

This week’s Plant of the Week is an employee choice by Rhonda! Aloe “Safari Sunrise” is an aloe hybrid that flowers with showy orange-pink and cream flowers. Rhonda says, “I love aloe plants not only because they make beautiful houseplants, but they also have useful medicinal properties. The ‘Safari Sunrise’ variety is one of the most unique types of aloe I have seen.”

The Aloe genus contains over 650 species of flowering succulent plants. Like other aloe plants, Safari Sunrise aloe stores water in its fleshy leaves which allows it to survive in dry, arid environments. Place this plant in a bright location and water after the soil has completely dried.

In warmer climates, this drought-tolerant, low maintenance plant is widely used in rock gardens and as ground cover. In cooler climates like our own this plant should come indoors for the winter. Keep away from pets, as this plant is toxic if ingested. If you are looking for a unique addition to your succulent collection, stop in and bring one home today!
