Preferred food items for food pantry
(“canned” refers to anything shelf stable: can, box, pouch)

· Peanut butter (ok to accept other nut butters, including sunflower seed and soy nut)
· Canned fish and meats, tuna, salmon, chicken (prefer not high salt items like Spam, corned beef)
· Canned beans, all kinds
· Canned vegetables, low sodium are great, but not required
· Shelf stable packaged fruit in juice or light syrup
· Canned beef stew and soup
· Pasta (prefer plain, not seasoned due to high sodium)
· Rice (prefer plain rice, not seasoned due to high sodium)
· Shelf stable or powdered milk
· Some “treats” – okay to have 20% of the bag for more “indulgent” foods like cookies, crackers

We also make some bags specifically for veterans without access to cooking facilities, and these items are great for those:

§ Smaller (single serving) sizes
§ Peanut butter
§ Tuna packets
§ Crackers, graham crackers
§ “bars” – granola, protein, nut bars
§ Fruit cups
§ Regular protein shakes (not Boost or Ensure)
§ Canned ready to eat foods, such as: ravioli, beef stew, etc.

Veteran's Benefits In New Hampshire:

New Hampshire Veteran's and Dependent Families Relief:
War Veterans and their dependent Families who are unable to support themselves shall be supported at public expense in the town or city in which they live. (RSA 165:5 )

New Hampshire State Veterans' Home: Located at Tilton, the Veterans' Home is a 250-bed facility, with 100 beds assigned to residents with dementia. The Veterans' Home is an intermediate, long-term care facility populated by nearly 400
staff. NHVH has formalized agreements with both the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and local hospitals for inpatient
hospitalization and specialized outpatient care. Contact the Veterans’ Home at (603) 527-4400 to determine eligibility.

New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery: Veterans, discharged under honorable conditions, and their dependents
who meet the criteria of eligibility are eligible for burial in the State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH. The cemetery
opened in September 1997. NH residency is not a requirement. Contact the State Veterans Cemetery at (603) 796-2026
for information or to determine eligibility. (RSA 110-B-74 )

Burial for Indigent New Hampshire Veterans: Indigent Veterans may be buried at the expense of the municipality in
which the Veteran died. (RSA 165:16 , RSA 165:17 )

Free Copies of Public Records for New Hampshire Veterans and Dependents: Copies of public records are provided
free when needed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to determine eligibility for benefits. The State Veterans
Council and its Veterans Service Officers shall assist Veterans and dependents in obtaining benefits to which entitled under
state or federal laws or regulations. (RSA 115:6 , RSA 115:7

VFW Crowns 2023 National Youth Scholarship Winners

Tennessee high school sophomore takes home first place $35,000 scholarship

WASHINGTON (March 6, 2023) – Tonight, during the 76th annual Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Parade of Winners ceremony, the organization proudly presented more than $171,000 in scholarships and awards as it named the national winners of its 2023 Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen youth scholarship competitions.

Sponsored by Twisted X, the Parade of Winners event featured the 53 national VFW Department (state) winners, along with Twisted X CEO and president, Prasad Reddy.

VFW National Commander Tim Borland was joined by VFW Auxiliary President Jane Reape to present this year’s national Voice of Democracy first place winner, Scotland Stewart, with the top $35,000 T.C. Selman Memorial Scholarship. Stewart, a sophomore at Franklin County High School in Wi******er, Tennessee, was sponsored by VFW Post 1893 in Estill Springs, Tennessee. Watch as he delivered his winning essay during this evening’s ceremony on this year’s theme, “Why is the Veteran Important?”

Second place winner Siri Corson, a junior at Fillmore Central High School in Harmony, Minnesota, sponsored by VFW Post 6893 and its Auxiliary in Preston, Minnesota, was awarded the $21,000 Charles Kuralt Memorial Scholarship. Gina Wierzbowski, a senior at Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden, Massachusetts, sponsored by VFW Post 620 located in Stoneham, Massachusetts, was named the third place winner and awarded the $15,000 VFW Scholarship. Also featured during tonight’s awards ceremony was the 2023 Patriot’s Pen first place winner, Leighton Peters. Sponsored by VFW Post 2204 and its Auxiliary in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, Peters was awarded the top Patriot’s Pen prize of $5,000. Watch as she delivered her winning essay during this evening's ceremony on this year’s theme, “My Pledge to Our Veterans.”

The Patriot’s Pen second place winner, Nolan Green, sponsored by VFW Post 8731 in Monticello, Minnesota, will receive a $4,000 award, while third place winner Makayla Cole, sponsored by VFW Post 5675 and its Auxiliary in Odessa, Missouri, will receive a $3,500 See the complete list of 2023 Patriot’s Pen national winners.
