Here on the farm, we leave some of last year's single seed dahlias in the ground over winter. If they make it, we have extra early blooms, which means food doe the pollinators. These get replaced by new seed dahlias in hopes of a few standouts. Either way, it's a win for the ๐Ÿ and ๐Ÿฆ‹ .

Our Orange Wonder Snaps came back beautifully! Our succession plantings of snaps were picked last year and left to overwinter in one of our tunnels. Of all the varieties, Orange Wonder wins for "worth it!!" While other varieties came back, Orange Wonder was the only one that did so with vigor. This may be a regular thing for us going forward with this variety.
Do you overwinter last year's snaps??

A space-saving way to start your Dahlia seeds.
I have limited space, so starting my Dahlia seeds this way ensures every cell is filled in the tray.

Spread seeds out in the center of a paper towel. Fold over and wet generously. I let them sit, saturated for about an hour. Then, into a zip lock they go. I blow a little warm air into the bag and place them in my grow tent on the top shelf... Not under lights.

Stay tuned... Result in 4-7 days... ๐Ÿคž

Oh, Sweet Pea... They are looking beautiful in the high tunnel - no heat. 3 weeks ago, I sprinkled 60 varieties in shoe boxes, making little humidity domes. I did not preload them. I put them in with the dahlia tubers, just under 50 degrees, until they sprouted. Next, I transplanted them into the deepest cell flats I have and transfered them right out to the high tunnel. We've had consistently cold - 31 to 38-degree nights, and they are thriving!! The plan is to get them into the garden beds the last week of February. We get hot quickly here in southern Delaware, and they need all the cool temps they can get. Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm banking on being able to grow a good seed crop in our 'not so favorable for sweet peas' weather. Fingers crossed! ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž

This year, I went out on a limb...

I decided to add Sweet Peas to our mix, but not just for flower production... but for seed! If you plant sweet peas, you know how hard it is to get variety and any quantity of those varieties. I hope to lend a hand in changing that here in the US. It not going to be easy in Delaware, but I'm up for the challenge!

Are you planting sweet peas?
What varieties are you panting?
What's your favorite variety and why??

DO YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS???
It's time to plant the sweet pea seeds here in zone 7B/8!!!

I sow my seeds indoors and germinate them at 50ยฐ. For me, that's an unfinished room in my house where I can turn down the heat. Once they germinate, they go right outside into an unheated greenhouse. Sweet peas don't ind the cold, and it keeps them short while they put down some roots. If it dip into the 20's, I'll add some agribon to keep them safe. Stay tuned to watch us grow!!!! It's going to be a great sweet pea season!!! ARE YOU GROWING SWEET PEAS?
