Duane and Cathy Warkentin moved to Miltonvale, KS in the fall of 1998. They dreamed of owning a small acreage in the country. The property included this large barn which once housed a hog farm. When Duane and Cathy moved, they first renovated parts of the Barn to house their woodworking business, Warkentin Cabinets. They had the pond dug and thanked the Lord when they had several 4 inch rains in one fall season that filled the pond. It has not rained like that since that time. They worked on building their home and began investing time and energy in their love for landscaping. Many flower beds and a garden were added to the yard as well as two water features. Duane uses one to catch the water as it flows down the hill and funnels it through landscaping features into the pond. The pond gained a new patio as well as a dock and small sand beach.
Several years later, their son joined them in the business and as it grew, it was decided a different space would be needed. Warkentin Cabinets moved to a new location within Miltonvale and added a showroom. The Barn, now mostly empty, was ready for a remodel. A game room was added that includes a pool table, ping pong table, movie viewing area, and many board games. Next came the addition of a living room area, kitchen and bathroom. Many family and guests were invited to share in the fun.
Duane has always had big ideas and wanted to do more. A bedroom was added with a queen bed and vanity. The living area was converted to include a queen size murphy bed. Additional adjustments were made and amenities were added to transform the space into a fully furnished apartment with a separate entrance from that of the game room. The new apartment was rented for a time.
During that time, it was decided that additional restroom facilities were needed as well as a catering kitchen or room for small events. So the transformation continued and the south room with a stove, refrigerator and half bath was added. A pass through catering window was added that went from the south room out onto the patio. Projects and improvements continued outside as well. A portico with an outdoor ceiling fan and lights was added over the patio to provide shade. A wind break of reclaimed room was built to hold a giant windmill head that Duane found in a nearby field. The Barn at Bear Bottoms officially opened for renters and small events. (Side note: Duane loves puns. Having moved from Colorado, Duane and Cathy love bears. Ask about the time one totaled their car. Thus βThe Barn at Bear Bottoms.)
