The 2022 garden season has officially started for us here today, as the ranunculus corms (πŸ™) are soaking now and going onto trays of soil later tonight. Last year was my last big hurrah for annuals, and this year we'll focusing on filling in our (once deemed) annual beds with more and more perennials (currants, gooseberries and grapes oh my). I'm still going to have bouquets available anytime, but doing just pre-orders and no weekly porch sales. Here's also some daffodils to get us excited for spring, they're the first flowers, and one of my very favorites, that I'll have bouquets of for sale (in just over 2 months!). Is this winter going by quicker than past years for anyone else too? I can't believe we're less than 50 days until crocus πŸ’•πŸ¦‹πŸŒΌ

Today's dehydrator load is something else 😍. I love slowly adding to my stash of floral confetti because it's a visual reminder to me that truly nothing goes to waste around here. All the flowers I grow were started from seeds which came in paper packets which were composted, they're then grown in rice hulls (a byproduct of the rice industry), leaf mulch and worm castings from our vermicomposting bins and are later fed with homemade fertilizers and teas made from various roots, seeds and berries. For every one thing I take from this garden, I give back 20 times. Our practices here are so more than just organic or waste free, they're regenerative. The biodiversity in our garden grows by the minute and it's expressed in super happy flowers πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹πŸ¦‹

The dahlia patch is starting to explode with blooms (and will continue 'til frost!). So far just the dahlias I planted from seed (which are a totally mystery as dahlia seeds aren't true to the mother plant, they could be any color/size) are blooming which has been fun since they're all a surprise, but I'm so excited for the blooms on the actual tubers I planted to open! Those are some stunners 😍. Message if you're looking for bouquets at all this week, otherwise I'll be selling more mason jar arrangements on my porch this Saturday!

Real harvests are finally starting to roll in! 🌼🌼🌼 Since I'll be officially selling bouquets starting tomorrow, I should share some cut flower care tips to make sure your blooms last as long as possible:

Always use a very clean vase. Empty the flower food packet included with your bouquet into 1 quart of lukewarm water. Fresh flowers are thirsty and drink a lot, so be sure to check the water level twice a day.

Keep them out of bright light and avoid putting them next to fruit, as ethylene (the gas emitted from ripening fruit) causes flowers to drop their petals.

Every 2-3 days change the water, cut at least a half inch off the end of the stems and rinse the stems up to the point they were submerged in the vase under cool water to get bacteria off.

Refresh the bouquet by removing fading stems. If the remaining flowers look too empty in the vase, you can always press them if they're still in good shape!

And enjoy 🌻 Flowers are a reminder to savor the moment

We're nearing the end of Daffodil season for us, we still have a few varieties in full bloom now that will take us into June, which means it's time for the summer annuals to go in! The last pic of all the seedlings was taken a month ago, they've since all been tucked into garden and have already gotten several batches of compost tea, have been watered pretty much only using water from the pond, which full of beneficial bacteria (like gallons and gallons of the lactobacillus we culture from sprouted wheat berries), they've been mulched with comfrey leaves and have cover crops (primarily buckwheat for now) sprouting in between all the seedlings. Happy plants πŸ˜‡

Here's the first more sizable tulip harvest we've had, with the fridge already nearly at capacity from little harvests here and there over the course of this month so far. In the cut flower world, tulips are grown as annuals since, once cut, they don't have enough energy to reliably flower the following year. Harvesting them bulb and all allows them to stay good in the fridge for up to 2 months since they're still connected to their food source, and now the garden bed is open for warm season annuals. When I purchased these bulbs in the fall, I was vaguely thinking of dedicating more of the garden to cut flowers for selling bouquets, and as winter continued it became an all-consuming thought haha. Now fast forward and I wish I had gotten more (like a lottttt more!) early tulip varieties, but I'm also incredibly grateful to be learning this craft on a small, unobtrusive scale. Learning how to grow ~20 new varieties of plants, from seed to harvest and all the pinching, trellising and conditioning in between, plus planning and keeping up with succession planting schedules is a lot. Glad the growing season has finally arrived so what has been in my head all these months will actually be out in the world 🌷🌷🌷

Starting off the next few months of heavy daffodil content with a bang. Pretty much all of our standard trumpets are in bloom right now, but this is our first double to open and start to unfurl! The excitement is practically overwhelming (and you can tell 'cuz, here I am, posting a picture of a daffodil that's only 1/4 opened πŸ˜…)

We've already enjoyed so many blooms and the growing season hasn't even started yet 😍. The record-breaking amount of snow last winter made the garden very happy and it shows!
