𝐄𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝟑 – 𝐇𝐈𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲

Don't just sit in silence on your way to work, tune into last week's episode of Sound Remedies!

We know men don’t go to the doctor as often as they should and, for the most part, we know the unfortunate social coding of machismo is to blame. In an era of information, wellness, transformation, and woke-ness, how are males of all ages still resisting health care until the last healthy moment? A bigger question is how to shift the narrative and urge more fellas — especially Black and Brown men — to prioritize regular checkups. Dasha and Kima inventory men’s mixed bag of messages, share stories of resistance and resolution and learn about common life cycles for men and their most under-discussed health issues with Dr. Marc Kennedy, Gastroenterologist with Aurora Medical Group.

Episode 2 – Virtual Insanity

"For most of us, our entire lives got relocated into digital spaces. The same screens we used for entertainment and communication, became the gathering venues for happy hours, blind dates, conferences and even funerals. From preschoolers to yoga instructors to therapists to medical professionals, “virtual” is the newest reality. And, for the foreseeable future, is here to stay. Dasha and Kima wonder aloud about the impact of unprecedented screen time, compare experiences and opinions about digital doctors and virtual care and take notes on how to maintain digital health from Dr. Amanpreet Sethi, Medical Director within Population Health & Risk."

Repost from 88Nine website:
"Finally, social stigmas around mental health are beginning to fall away. While it’s encouraging for therapy to be the new brunch and mindfulness the hottest “app”, it’s important to remember that mental wellness is not a trend. Our slippery use of social language and DIY labels could do more harm than good. Sitting in an anxious moment or feeling depressed are not the same as having anxiety or depression. Kima and Dasha share stories of self-MIS-diagnosis, label liberation and get our terms and tools straight with Dr. Munther Barakat, Director Of Behavioral Health Therapy for Advocate Aurora Health."

It's been QUITE the journey! Six months into our endeavor and a worldwide pandemic suspended "gatherings," precisely why we opened The Retreat doors. Our next steps have been, understandably, unclear. We even missed our one-year anniversary!

While our physical business was suspended almost a year ago, our mission has not stopped. Virtually, we managed and/or created events with UW-Milwaukee, Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin, Woodland Pattern and Boswell Books, City of Milwaukee's Bronzeville Week, and initiated virtual poetry events. Most recently, we translated our implicit bias training into a webinar and broadcast on PBS.

Proudly, our last rental was with by Funky Fly FlowerChild, as they utilized the space to produce thousands and thousands of gorgeous face masks for the City Health Department. Moving forward, The Retreat will continue as a virtual service provider for facilitation, event consultation & hosting, workshops and dialogues. This will include a Spring relaunch of our Folk School, an initiative for investing in content experts, thought leaders, artisans and entrepreneurs.

We're able to continue dreaming forward with a grant from Milwaukee Bucks player Jrue Holiday. We are SO grateful for this investment of confidence, as well as the continued support from Brew City Match, Historic King Drive Bid Wisconsin Womens Business Initiative.

and YOU.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for The Retreat. We are *still* committed to curating space and opportunity for "ideas to plan and play" and for people "to gather and grow."

Community stakeholders and husband and wife Kima Hamilton and Dasha Kelly Hamilton wanted to create a place in Milwaukee where people could congregate and talk about issues affecting their community, but also share their creativity.

The Retreat MKE

A retreat is both position and place. It’s the pause we take along the way to reassess plans and, sometimes, realign our very selves. Inspired by human and social wellness, The Retreat is space for ideas to plan and play and place for people to gather and grow.

We’re passionate about creating space for mission-driven endeavors and ideas. Our venue has two levels with an event gallery, breakout areas, meeting room, “floating desk” shared office, and a podcast studio. We’re located on historic King Drive in Milwaukee’s Bronzeville neighborhood, less than five minutes from the arena and downtown and around the corner from America’s Black Holocaust Museum. We are adjacent to a city parking lot and have ample street parking.
