Members and their guests celebrated our new butterfly garden on Wednesday with champagne, a gourmet lunch, educational presentations, and the release of three beautiful monarch butterflies! A monumental amount of planning, work and expertise went into creating this beautiful garden on the outskirts of our parking lot. The garden is located on the Lake Michigan Monarch Migration path to and from the protected UNESCO Monarch Sanctuaries in Mexico. It will be a tranquil rest stop and feeding station for monarchs during their critical journey. A huge thank you to member Shelly Culea for her expertise and for turning our dream of a butterfly garden into a reality! Additional “thank yous” go out to Anita Pietrykowski for creating the perfect name (Miss Mortimer’s Monarch Garden) and for sharing information about Mary Mortimer, one of our beloved founding members. A big thank you to monarch expert, Dr. Tim Heitman for sharing his fascinating presentation about Monarchs. And we can’t forget to thank WCW employee Cynthia, who worked tirelessly this hot summer to keep the new garden watered!

Women of the Club:
If these Walls could Talk
Inaugural Athenaeum Award Presentation
Thursday, June 17
11:30 AM Arrival
11:45 AM Lunch
12:30 PM Program
(Zoom or in-person option)
The Woman’s Club of Wisconsin has always been a gathering place for strong women with a variety of interests, beliefs, and activities. As the Milwaukee Sentinel said when we opened our clubhouse in 1887, the Woman’s Club was an “organized effort to unite the graces of social life with serious achievements.” What was true then is true now.
This special Club-wide program will begin in our past, with tales of Club members involved in abolition, suffrage, prison reform, and more. Those tales will be tied to the present, featuring the work of today’s Club and the women who gather at the WCW. We will see how stories from our past illuminate through time from then … until now.
At the close of the program, the winner of the Athenaeum award will be revealed.
This year the WCW Foundation awarded $106,000 in grants to
29 community organizations. The WCW members are amazing and bring so much value to the Milwaukee community. Here are SOME of the thank you messages received from this year's group of grant recipients.
We invite WCW members and their guests to join us for lunch and the viewing of the full grant recipients’ acceptance video!
Foundation Day
Tuesday, June 1
11:30 AM Arrival
11:45 AM Lunch
12:30 PM Grant recipients’
acceptance video viewing
In a typical year the “Foundation Day” would be the highlight of our work. It is the day when our grant recipients tell us about their
organizations and how they will use the WCW Foundation grant
dollars to improve the greater Milwaukee community. Alas, due to the COVID-19 virus, this is not a typical year. But we have a wonderful plan to highlight our grantees’ outstanding work. The Foundation is presenting a filmed ceremony introducing the grantees and giving them the opportunity to tell us about their work.

Dr. Anastatia Sims What exactly happened? Disenfranchisement in the Post-Civil War South
Thank you Dr. Anastatia Sims for presenting to the Woman's Club for the second time!
What exactly happened?
Disenfranchisement in the
Post-Civil War South
Southern historian Dr. Anastatia Sims, who did such a fabulous job telling the tale of the final finish to the 19th Amendment, returned via Zoom to tell us all about Disenfranchisement in the Post-Civil War South. She set the stage generally and then offers a case study of North Carolina's white supremacy campaigns in the 1890s. It helps explain how “the South” lost the war but won the peace. Part of the road to now.
The study of history informs the present, and this lecture by a southern historian gave us lots to chew on.
"Armageddon in Tennessee: the Final Battle over the 19th Amendment."
On August 26 th 100 years ago the 19th Amendment went into effect. Last week, to celebrate the final ratification of the Amendment, the Woman's Club of Wisconsin presented the story "Armageddon in Tennessee: the Final Battle over the 19th Amendment."
