Community presence at our two House committee hearings had an undeniable impact on the reception of the bill to grow the Film Production Tax Credit.

This was acknowledged during the hearings by committee members and afterwards between legislators.

We anticipate we will have a hearing in the Senate Taxes Committee as well, hopefully soon. If/when this happens we will need to show as much or more community support as we did in the House.

To help prepare for this, please take the time, as soon as you can, to reach out to your network and ask that they follow MFA on social media and subscribe to our email list (info below). This is where we release our Calls to Action.

If each person here can secure 1 or 2 more people in this effort, and we take our increased numbers over to the Senate Taxes Committee, community support for our cause we be undeniable.

Finally! Production people, including PA’s deserve this.

I’m an officer for ISTSE Local 490 in MN, we’re working on extending this to the Area Standards and Low Budget Agreements as well.

Too many PA’s (and young green workers), are taken advantage of on film sets, especially low budget ones. Low pay, long hours, no overtime, unsafe working conditions and harassment prevail. Aside from breaking union rules, state labor laws are being broken. Many young people, who do not know their rights, and have been told that’s how things have always been done, it’s what PA’s have to go through, it weeds out the weak. They’ve been told that if they say no or stand up for themselves they won’t be hired again.

This industry needs to evolve. EVERYONE on set should be treated fairly and professionally. Those of you that know me, know how passionate I am about this. PLEASE, STAND IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE PRODUCTION WORKERS IN OUR INDUSTRY

AMPTP Film and Television Negotiations Stalled, Union to Hold Nationwide Strike Authorization Vote

LOS ANGELES, CA — After months of negotiating successor contracts to the Producer-IATSE Basic Agreement, and the Theatrical and Television Motion Picture Area Standard Agreement, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) announced Monday it does not intend to make any counteroffer to the IATSE’s most recent proposal.

Throughout the bargaining process, the AMPTP has failed to work with us on addressing the most grievous problems in their workplaces, including:

• Excessively unsafe and harmful working hours.
• Unlivable wages for the lowest paid crafts.
• Consistent failure to provide reasonable rest during meal breaks, between workdays, and on weekends.
• Workers on certain “new media” streaming projects get paid less, even on productions with budgets that rival or exceed those of traditionally released blockbusters.

It is incomprehensible that the AMPTP, an ensemble that includes media mega- corporations collectively worth trillions of dollars, claims it cannot provide behind-the- scenes crews with basic human necessities like adequate sleep, meal breaks, and living wages. Worse, management does not appear to even recognize our core issues as problems that exist in the first place.

These issues are real for the workers in our industry, and change is long overdue. However, the explosion of streaming combined with the pandemic has elevated and aggravated working conditions, bringing 60,000 behind-the-scenes workers covered by these contracts to a breaking point. We risked our health and safety all year, working through the Pandemic to ensure that our business emerged intact. Now, we cannot and will not accept a deal that leaves us with an unsustainable outcome.

In response to the AMPTP’s tactics, IATSE members are mobilizing in preparation of a nationwide strike authorization vote to demonstrate our commitment to achieving the change that is long overdue in this industry.

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees or IATSE (full name: International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada), is a labor union representing over 150,000 technicians, artisans and craftspersons in the entertainment industry, including live theatre, motion picture and television production, broadcast, and trade shows in the United States and Canada.
