What is Jumping the broom?

Jumping the broom is a wedding tradition with deep roots in Black history. It originated during slavery, when enslaved people were not legally allowed to marry. Because their unions weren’t recognized by law, many developed their own rituals to honor and formalize their commitment to one another.

Here are some symbolic reasons:

"Sweeping away the old and welcoming the new life together."

"The start of a new household and crossing into a new chapter."

Also, in some West African cultures, brooms held spiritual significance and were used in rituals to sweep away evil spirits.

Due to high interest, we are now scheduling 15-minute time slots for each couple to sign their license or exchange vows. Please reach out to reserve your spot. Walk-ins are still welcome!

To our LGBTQ+ community

We want to take a moment to acknowledge the feelings of fear, uncertainty and concern many of you may be experiencing right now. We understand how the recent political developments might impact LGBTQ+ rights, including the hard-fought right to marriage equality. Please know that you're not alone, this community stands together, committed to protecting and supporting each other through whatever may come.

The Little Wedding Co. Will be performing FREE marriage license singings on Sunday, November 17th at Queermunity from 1:00pm-4:00pm.
