Here at Westside this week, we have been romping around with a very special guest teacher, Shinichi Iova-Koga as part of our REVEAL workshop series. As a culmination of this 3-day intensive, Shinichi will offer a lecture-demonstration about his work:

➡ Saturday, December 14th 6-7pm. Free and open to the public.

Shinichi serves as the Artistic Director of the physical theater and dance company inkBoat, founded by Shinichi in 1998. He has toured in North America, Europe, South Korea and Japan, often collaborating with local artists in museums, theaters, studios and site-specific locations.

Ruth Zaporah has been his continuing mentor since 2000. Her method of improvisational skill building is called Action Theater (Shinichi is an Authorized Action Theater™ Teacher). Significant past mentors are Ralph Lemon, who instigated ideas about “anti-dance,” and Anna Halprin, who encouraged community building through the art-making process. Shinichi served as Anna’s associate director for numerous projects from 2009-2012 and co-taught dances for men with her until 2018.

This workshop integrates feeling states with physical movement to develop that elusive yet palpable quality known as presence.

The unknown invites a response. Strong presence allows us to open, to fly through the clouds of the mind and smooth out the nerves. Becoming receptive, opportunities visit us. Disciplined explorations, deconstructions and compositions develop the skills for clear, decisive and playful responses to each offering arising within the improvisation.

What an incredible few weeks here at the theater. It has felt...expansive. Thank you to the Missoula community for showing up for both guest and local artists here on the Westside stage.

♥Thank you to Robbie Schaefer and Danielle Wertz from the tour of Both Sides Now and Har Shalom for hosting a very special Shabbat ceremony before the Friday performance. Duende Libre--wow-- thank you for hosting a multi-generational community percussion workshop and then performing your out-of-this-world jazz concert. And finally, thank you to the local organizations and folks who have brought in their family, friends and communities to celebrate and advocate for the arts and to share their stories. ♥

Here's to the season of gratitude! All of us here at the theater are so grateful to ALL of you. Duende Libre is an award-winning jazz trio whose original music draws upon ancestral musical traditions from Cuba, Brazil, and West Africa. Each having apprenticed with direct descendants and master musicians of these traditions, they consider themselves disciples of their teachers. The result: A euphoric 21st-century jazz that honors its historical roots, pushing open the boundaries of genre to invoke a powerful sonic freedom.

For this performance the trio will be joined by award-winning trombonist and composer Naomi Moon Siegel.

About the workshop: Explore Fundamentals of Latin Rhythms w/ Duende Libre

Explore the rich and diverse rhythmic legacy of Brazil, Cuba, and the Caribbean in this hands-on workshop. We’ll use active participation, call & response, and live demonstration to give you a deeper understanding of how you can apply these African-based rhythms to your own music. Open to all instrumentalists, vocalists, and music lovers who want to deepen their listening and musical understanding. Instruments welcome but not required.

With these words, we are drawn into the world of Both Sides Now, a theatrical concert that explores the music and lives of long-time friends and one-time lovers, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen.

Created by, and starring Robbie Schaefer and Danielle Wertz, the cabaret-style performance travels decades alongside songs such as A Case of You, Hallelujah, Big Yellow Taxi, Suzanne, and many more. Both Sides Now is at once a piece of the 60’s and 70’s, and of right now--offering us a story about the messiness of being human, of lives persistently lived at the edge of growth, and of finding the courage to turn toward one another, again and again.

About the Workshop:

💥PLAY💥 Participants will explore the relationship between language, gesture and theater and use "play" as a means to unlock the full-potential in their movement. Improvisational tools and phrases utilized during the creation of LED's work, Kid Lightning will be incorporated to stir imaginations and build worlds.
*All levels of theater, dance and dance enthusiasts welcome

Lauren Edson, originally from Boise, Idaho, is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of LED. She is a dancer, award-winning choreographer, producer and director. She received her training at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and The Juilliard School and was a celebrated dancer with Trey McIntyre Project for many years. She returned to her hometown with the desire to build a community of artists and art-making practices that inspire risk-taking, greatness and sustainability. Described as a “choreographer of the first rank,” by The Seattle Times, her works have been commissioned and presented by: The Kennedy Center (DC), Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival (MA), San Francisco Dance Film Festival (CA), Dance Camera West (CA), Winspear Opera House (TX), The McCallum Theater (CA), The Freeman Company (CA), Houston Metropolitan Dance (TX), Milwaukee Ballet (WI), Whim W’Him (WA), Ballet Idaho (ID), Northwest Dance Project (OR) and SALT Contemporary Dance (UT).

She received the 2022 Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, is a 2021 Alexa Rose Fellow, a two-time recipient of the ICA Performing Arts Fellowship (2015, 2021), a 2023 choreographer of Dance Lab NY, winner of NWDP’s Pretty Creatives’ International Choreography Competition, the Grand Prize Winner of the McCallum Theater’s Dance Under the Stars Choreography Festival, a United States Artist Fellowship nominee and recipient of the 2019 Washington Award for Excellence in Choreography.

LED is a group of artists, directors, designers and producers who make art. Shaped by the artistic vision of husband and wife co-founders, Lauren Edson and Andrew Stensaas, LED weaves movement, original music, captivating stories and stunning visuals into cinematic worlds.

Proudly based in Boise, Idaho, LED is a dance company, a music project, a film studio and so much more. Named by Dance Magazine as, "25 to Watch" and described as, "virtuosic-eye candy that invites the audience into another world," LED continues to redefine what an artistic encounter can look like and is a significant part of putting Boise on the map as a cultural hub.

Kid Lightning tells the story of a group of talented contestants on a popular game show. Set within a 1970’s stylized world, these individuals push their limits to claim fame and enter the intoxicating arena of celebrity, only to discover that it was more than they bargained for.

💥 westFEST Workshop: Performance Art w/ Gab Giordano 💥

➡ Saturday, Sept. 28 @ 2pm-5pm

This workshop is for anyone and everyone that has ever been curious about performance art. If you've ever wanted to share something "strange" or "weird" or "simple." We will explore elements of performance art and use our sensory systems to create stimuli influenced pieces.

You'll leave with a short performance art piece AND --if you would like--can be a part of westFEST's Okay...Go! showcase-style event on Sunday, Sept. 29.

Gab Giordano has lived in Missoula since 2017 except for one reprieve year in Salmon, Idaho. They got their MA in Theatre from the University of Montana with a minor in Psychology. Their senior thesis was a one hour half-improvised, song/dance, performance art experience. They currently work as the event coordinator for Fact & Fiction books downtown. When not at work, they can be found at the dog park with their girl Shuggie or at the rave.
