With these words, we are drawn into the world of Both Sides Now, a theatrical concert that explores the music and lives of long-time friends and one-time lovers, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen.

About the Workshop:

💥PLAY💥 Participants will explore the relationship between language, gesture and theater and use "play" as a means to unlock the full-potential in their movement. Improvisational tools and phrases utilized during the creation of LED's work, Kid Lightning will be incorporated to stir imaginations and build worlds.
*All levels of theater, dance and dance enthusiasts welcome

Lauren Edson, originally from Boise, Idaho, is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of LED. She is a dancer, award-winning choreographer, producer and director. She received her training at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and The Juilliard School and was a celebrated dancer with Trey McIntyre Project for many years. She returned to her hometown with the desire to build a community of artists and art-making practices that inspire risk-taking, greatness and sustainability. Described as a “choreographer of the first rank,” by The Seattle Times, her works have been commissioned and presented by: The Kennedy Center (DC), Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival (MA), San Francisco Dance Film Festival (CA), Dance Camera West (CA), Winspear Opera House (TX), The McCallum Theater (CA), The Freeman Company (CA), Houston Metropolitan Dance (TX), Milwaukee Ballet (WI), Whim W’Him (WA), Ballet Idaho (ID), Northwest Dance Project (OR) and SALT Contemporary Dance (UT).

She received the 2022 Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, is a 2021 Alexa Rose Fellow, a two-time recipient of the ICA Performing Arts Fellowship (2015, 2021), a 2023 choreographer of Dance Lab NY, winner of NWDP’s Pretty Creatives’ International Choreography Competition, the Grand Prize Winner of the McCallum Theater’s Dance Under the Stars Choreography Festival, a United States Artist Fellowship nominee and recipient of the 2019 Washington Award for Excellence in Choreography.

LED is a group of artists, directors, designers and producers who make art. Shaped by the artistic vision of husband and wife co-founders, Lauren Edson and Andrew Stensaas, LED weaves movement, original music, captivating stories and stunning visuals into cinematic worlds.

Proudly based in Boise, Idaho, LED is a dance company, a music project, a film studio and so much more. Named by Dance Magazine as, "25 to Watch" and described as, "virtuosic-eye candy that invites the audience into another world," LED continues to redefine what an artistic encounter can look like and is a significant part of putting Boise on the map as a cultural hub.

Kid Lightning tells the story of a group of talented contestants on a popular game show. Set within a 1970’s stylized world, these individuals push their limits to claim fame and enter the intoxicating arena of celebrity, only to discover that it was more than they bargained for.

💥 westFEST Workshop: Performance Art w/ Gab Giordano 💥

➡ Saturday, Sept. 28 @ 2pm-5pm

This workshop is for anyone and everyone that has ever been curious about performance art. If you've ever wanted to share something "strange" or "weird" or "simple." We will explore elements of performance art and use our sensory systems to create stimuli influenced pieces.

You'll leave with a short performance art piece AND --if you would like--can be a part of westFEST's Okay...Go! showcase-style event on Sunday, Sept. 29.

Gab Giordano has lived in Missoula since 2017 except for one reprieve year in Salmon, Idaho. They got their MA in Theatre from the University of Montana with a minor in Psychology. Their senior thesis was a one hour half-improvised, song/dance, performance art experience. They currently work as the event coordinator for Fact & Fiction books downtown. When not at work, they can be found at the dog park with their girl Shuggie or at the rave.

Title: For Maira Kalman
This work-in-progress exists in its most raw form, at the intersection of awareness and transformation. The responsibility of creating any art can be exhausting, leaving one feeling unmoored. As we navigate this human experience, we are the doer, the reactor, and the observer, constantly perceiving the interplay between action and reaction. This short piece is the early stages of a deeper exploration into the idea of holding something and also being held—whether by a person, a concept, space, or by oneself. Inspired by Maira Kalman’s question, “What do women hold?”, this work seeks to uncover the layers of that experience in holding: the work, the work of the world, the work of being human, and most of all, the love.

Title: Never Before | Never Again
This theater-dance performer is no stranger to Westside Theater-- come find out which wig(s) this DYNAMO will wear for this performance! Wolcott's improvisatory performance is a hyper live spectacle blending structured improvisation with her signature comedic flair and "rolodex" of characters. Her compositions operate like a series of cinematographic quick cuts where density of narrative detail is delivered in complex blasts, placed in theatrical settings that look like the dreams of the real places we inhabit. Witnessing a dance being composed in real time gives the audience a sense of being an intimate co-conspirator in the venture and a feeling of shared risk.

✨Westside launches REVEAL: a community masterclass workshop series✨ Our first guest artist is Francesca Romo teaching Contemporary Performance!

FRANCESCA ROMO was born in London and knew she wanted to dance early in life. After graduating from the Royal Ballet School and London Contemporary Dance School, she danced for The Richard Alston Dance Company from 2003-2006. While on tour, she fell in love with the U.S., and moved to New York to Co-found the Gallim Dance Company in 2006 where she was Associate Director until 2014. Francesca has had the fortune of touring and working both internationally and nationally, and now resides at Dancers’ Workshop in Jackson Hole where she dances, teaches and mentors. Fran is an integral part of wellness programming, teaching Gyrotonic and Craniosacral work with both adults and infants. She is a recipient of the Wyoming Arts Council Grant for 2022.

Westside Theater hosts a series of movement workshops to inspire, investigate and reveal aspects of the creative process focusing on movement and dance arts. These workshops are connected to our season programming and designed to bring guest artists directly into the studio with the Western Montana community, from professional dancers to novice movers to interdisciplinary performers.

Reveal Workshop Series is made possible by the Montana Arts Council.
