In anticipation of their Montana summer wedding date, Caitlin and Leo wanted engagement photos that highlighted their lives living in the Pacific Northwest. Happy to travel, I flew out to their new home in Portland, Oregon to explore and celebrate their relationship with a couple's engagement photo session. Jackie and Mike are travelers at heart. So when the time came for the engagement portrait session, we traveled to one of their favorite local spots, the Missouri Headwaters State Park.

Each of their professions has them traveling all over the state in roles that cater to their love of new places and their curiosity to meet new people. Mike is a sales rep for Kettlehouse Brewery and Jackie is a producer at Montana PBS.

The more they got to know one another, the more their commonalities started stacking up. Mike and Jackie soon discovered they shared a love for the history of national parks. Even more, as their relationship grew, they discovered the shared value of deep conversations and intellect. So when the pandemic quarantine came to Montana, these two decided to keep the conversation going and moved in together. Jackie and Mike both agree the experience made them grow even stronger.

For Jackie, she loves the extroverted, loving, and loyal energy Mike brings not only to their relationship but also to everyone around him. “He’s in awe of his people,” said Jackie. “With heart and soul, he is very thoughtful in planning new experiences for us that I might like. His energy and passion for life is so magnetic. I feel so lucky.”

Tuck, Jackie’s pitbull-Labrador mix (who has now claimed Mike as his, too), agrees. Jackie smiles as she mentioned that Mike and Tuck have become soulmates.

Mike loves Jackie’s desire for adventure, whether that be their frequent small-town dates, visiting hot springs, breweries, or canoe racing on the Missouri River. She’s steady and always there for him. They love to play outside together, often adorned in Chacos and Carhartts. Mike would have it no other way.

That time last Spring when I helped my Bozeman friend Audrey Cromwell create campaign photos for her successful run for Gallatin County Attorney. It's a fun experience to be driving down the road and see a large billboard with a familiar face and thinking, "I know that photo!" She is doing great things for our community. Proud to have played my part.

Smiling big at the Fairmont Hot Springs after a fun engagement photo session with Amrita and Jeff. These two dentists were in Anaconda, Montana for a conference and some well-earned R&R. The resort and surrounding mountainous public lands were the perfect locations for this couple to celebrate their relationship and love of travel.

In honor of her first road trip through Yellowstone National Park, Christina wanted to celebrate her new golden retriever puppy, Wade with a pet portrait photo experience. We explored the old homestead in Emigrant, Montana where she was staying. The puppy phase is so fleeting. I love the photos we created of her handsome little guy. A fun day!

Time to pop the champagne! Shannon and Liam are getting married!

Looking forward to celebrating and photographing these two tomorrow during their wedding day at The Woodlands at Cottonwood Canyon. It promises to be a great time.

It has been just lovely getting to know this couple and their five-year-old husky/sheppard, Iro, over the past year. Last summer, we photographed their couples portrait experience at Mt. Ellis outside Bozeman, Montana. Bozeman sunsets from a great view are pretty hard to beat. Here are some of their favorite moments from the day.

I learned the other day that ten of my couple engagement photos were awarded Diamond awards from the Wedding Photojournalist Association.

It’s been over seven years since I last entered a photography contest. In my former days as a photojournalist, contests were a staple activity I participated in to gauge how my photos stood up to industry peers. But as my business evolved into my service of others, I found I cared less and less about contests. Winning awards (or not) wasn’t an indicator of whether or not I was a good photographer. The satisfaction of my clients is. Transitioning out of a place of personal vanity (in my youth) and into a place of client-focused service became my ultimate North Star.

I approach each couple as a blank canvas, and in listening, I discover what is truly meaningful to them and what makes them unique. I’m not trying to turn my couples into something they are not. Rather, I strive to celebrate the wonderful individuals that they are. That process sets the stage for every couple I photograph.

These photos are successful in my eyes because they are a true reflection of each unique relationship that I was able to learn about and highlight. The rewards for me are the smiles and genuine gratitude each of these people has shared with me and how I was able to make them feel.

In my absence from contests, I was able to refine and develop my true, authentic, creative voice.

I’ve returned to participating in contests because I’ve realized they are more than just about recognition. They are about fostering a larger creative community. Something that I’ve realized I’ve missed over the years and now want to remedy.

It’s time to show up again and let my voice be heard.

It’s good to see that years later, the art I create still resonates with my professional peers. It’s the affirmation that my personal creative path was one worth taking. I’m excited to see where it will take me next.

Who's been out hiking and finding morel mushrooms in Montana this Spring?

I love this annual springtime activity and have been stocking up my morel stash over the last few weeks.

Recently eating a gourmet meal in my own kitchen reminded me of the time I explored the Gallatin River with Brianna and Kyle during their couples portrait session.

For Brianna and Kyle, life doesn't get much better than when they walk the banks of the Gallatin River near with their dog, Speck, and find wild morel mushrooms to turn into fancy meals.

This engaged couple has made a life together fostering their shared love of the outdoors and wild foods. We decided to highlight that during their engagement session. Together, we walked along their favorite stretch of the Gallatin River, found a bunch of morels, and cooked a moose backstrap feast fireside making photos all along the way.

I loved photographing them creating together in their outdoor, fireside kitchen with uncontrollable smiles on their faces.

Jackie and Mike's Union Pacific Dining Lodge wedding in West Yellowstone was the perfect backdrop to the national park's theme they showcased for friends and family at their wedding.

After the ceremony, we went to Quake Lake to give Mike and Jackie a chance to soak up this moment together. Montana’s fall colors were at their peak golden glory.

Big changes are on the horizon for the Childress family.

Tina and John were soon-to-be empty nesters. They wanted this year’s Montana vacation to celebrate their kids with a family portrait session, and also highlight their son with senior pictures. While discovering all that they cherish about their adult children, we also talked about how Montana has helped shaped their kids’ lives. Through them, their children have fostered an affinity for being riverside and a love of flyfishing.

2021 was a wonderful, whirlwind year.

I helped some great couples and families celebrate their relationships and created a lot of solutions for business professionals elevating their visual story brand. It ended up being one of my busiest years since I started Greener Visuals back in 2002.
