The Origins of Mardi Gras in Mobile, AL: The Birthplace of America's Oldest Carnival

Did you know that Mardi Gras, the vibrant and colorful celebration we all know today, actually began in Mobile, Alabama? While New Orleans often takes the spotlight, itā€™s Mobile that holds the title of Americaā€™s oldest Mardi Gras celebration.

Mardi Gras in Mobile traces its roots back to **1703**, when the French settlers in the area first established the **Mobile Mardi Gras Society**. The earliest celebration wasn't quite like the parades weā€™re familiar with today, but it laid the groundwork for what would eventually become a grand tradition.

The first formal celebration took place when the French organized a small, private ball and street procession to mark the end of the season of excess, right before the somber season of Lent began. This was a major milestone in the history of Mardi Gras in the United States, making Mobile the birthplace of this annual extravaganza.

In the years that followed, the celebration grew. **Krewe of Mobile**, established in 1830, is considered one of the oldest Mardi Gras organizations. As more krewes (social organizations) formed, the festivities expanded with elaborate balls, costumes, and, of course, the iconic parades that are synonymous with Mardi Gras today.

Today, Mobileā€™s Mardi Gras is a unique blend of historical tradition and modern revelry. The city hosts colorful parades, lively street parties, and delicious Cajun cuisine, drawing in thousands of visitors each year who come to experience the vibrant atmosphere and rich history of the celebration.

So, while New Orleans may be the more famous destination for Mardi Gras, Mobile holds a special place as the birthplace of America's oldest Carnival. Whether you're strolling down the streets of Mobile or reveling in the festivities, youā€™re participating in a tradition that has spanned centuries.

Happy Mardi Gras, yā€™all!

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12: I'll be delivering my 12th annual Learning Lunch talk at the History Museum of Mobile. The theme this year is Where Floats Come From, and I'm going to show y'all some super-cool stuff you've never seen before. It's always a good time, and the Excelsior Band will be there to play before and after. The talk starts at noon, but come early, get a seat, maybe a free copy of Mobile Mask, bring your lunch, and settle in for the show.
