On the day of June 19, 1865, slavery was declared “ended” and all slaves were officially supposed to be free. We acknowledge this day and celebrate it in our community because it represents Freedom for us. It represents the breaking of the chains that legally held us down for so long.
• However, in the state of Alabama, slaves were still illegally being shipped to America. In December of 1865, slavery was actually abolished in the United States.
• We are currently still fighting so hard for equality, but we use today to show where we’ve come from and to celebrate our ancestors for allowing us to be here today through their courage and their faith
