Pirelli

We’re back with some more ! In the 1940s and 1950s, high-speed duels weren’t just fought on four wheels, but on two as well. Rider-engineer Piero Taruffi was committed to breaking every track record, with two main motorcycle manufacturers, Guzzi and Gilera, contending for the top spot. The common denominator? The Pirelli brand. In 1948, Gianni Leoni broke the world speed record at Monza on his “Guzzino” with Pirelli tires.

The new Hill & Davis City of Burbank Streamliner showed up at Bonneville in 1952 to prove to the world that hot rodders had their stuff together. Note the state-of-the-art trailer for the day. The car was entered in three classes. In A Streamliner, they had a small 179" flattie for power and ran 172.33 mph for first in class. In Class B, they had a 248" motor and qualified first in class at 199 mph, then went out and shocked everyone when they set the record at 230.16 mph. In Class C, they had a 282" engine but ran out of time and didn't post a speed. Some trivia— The body was designed by Dean Batchelor who also designed the So-Cal liner body that held the record the car just broke.

The Golden Arrow
Henry Segrave had a need for speed.
After serving as a British fighter pilot in World War I, he won numerous car races in the 1920s before retiring to concentrate exclusively at smashing speed records.
He set his first land speed record in 1926, pushing a car named Ladybird to a speed of 152.33 miles per hour. That record was broken just a month later.
Segrave regained the top spot in spectacular fashion in 1927, when he hit 203.79 miles per hour in the Sunbeam 1000 HP Mystery, making him the first person to exceed 200 miles per hour. His brakes melted as he raced down the sands of Daytona Beach, Florida, forcing him to stop by veering into the shallow waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
That record was broken twice in 1928, with American Ray Keech hitting 207.55 miles per hour. Meanwhile, Segrave was developing a car that would leave his rivals in the dust.

When huge fire-breathing beasts roamed the streets…

Legend…

Legend…

And now for a team that can be easily defined as the physical manifestation of fulfilling their Destiny…

On this weeks Racers Spotlight, we have Danny Thompson and the Challenger 2!!!!!

Originally Debuting in 1968 as the Mickey Thompson Autolite Special, the car was the second built by the legendary wheelman with the intention of taking the overall piston powered land speed record. Initial test runs showed immense Promise, as the car was timed to approximately 365 mph in the mile and a terminal speed of over 400 mph. With Rain preventing further attempts at the record, and Sponsors deciding to pursue other endeavors, the car was placed in storage for 20 years.

20 years after the initial tests, and having retired from driving duties long ago, Mickey Thompson and his son Danny pulled the car out of storage with plans for another attempt at the record with Danny Behind the wheel. Tragedy struck before this could happen, when Mickey and his Wife Trudy were killed in front of their Bradbury California home. The car was then placed back into Long term storage, up until the car was pulled from storage to Chase the dream shared by father and son on the 50th anniversary of the initial 406 mph pass.

Updating to a pair of 500 Cubic inch Nitro Burning Brad Anderson Hemi from the original ford Drivetrain, and a pair of B and J Transmissions, Danny took the Now Named Challenger 2 to a new Record of 448.757 MPH in AA/FS, closing the Net on a 50 year dream to bring the Thompson name back into the Record books and accomplish the Dream his father started so long ago.

My Life on Two Wheels

Dylan Phillips a Pembrokeshire man has just set a Guinness World Record for the fastest wheelbarrow after clocking speeds of 52mph during Straightliners Speed Week 2024 at Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire.
He built the wheelbarrow in his shed in Crymych, and smashed the previous record of 46mph.
The 38-year-old said it felt "fun and surreal".

In a parallel universe, this exits. If Yamaha built the RD350 YPVS today, it would make 110bhp, weigh 165kg wet and cost around £9,500.

Using fuel injection instead of carbs, a beam frame instead of the steel cradle, USD forks and radial calipers. A chunky alloy banana swingarm and wider 17" wheels over the skinny 18" items of the 1983 bike.

In keeping with the style of the original, the bodywork would remain mostly as before with minor revisions and a round LED perimeter headlight.

Costing the same as a 2024 MT09 (or a tidy used 1983 RD350 today, they're only going up in price), it would make 5bhp less but would be 20kg lighter.
