Well folks, we certainly didn’t see this one coming! We are super stoked to have been nominated and announced as a finalist for the Wammies (Washington Area Music Association awards) in the category of best bluegrass/folk album! Thanks to all who helped make this thing a reality- from friends and family donating to get this thing rolling, Mystery Ton Studios and Kenny for recording, Will Shenk for mixing/mastering and our super talented friends Matthew Zuckerman, Renee Izzi, and Samantha Press - music for sitting in with us in the studio. If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me why I continue to go into the studio to record yet another batch of songs I've written when "it's so expensive and there's no money in streaming."

[That may be the case. Or maybe someday I'll hit a windfall and all my songs will pay for themselves ten times over, you never know.]

But what people who don't "get it" will never understand:

Some things are worth more than money.

My favorite songwriters are mostly friends of mine. They might not be famous or headlining the biggest festivals (though some of them are and that’s fun, too) what’s important is that we have stayed up late over campfires and on couches, singing our songs to one another and sharing the bitter and the sweet with old guitars and hearts that have too many miles on them for their years. ❤️‍🩹

Most of my songwriter friends live far away from me. But when I can just turn on a streaming service or CD or record player from anywhere in the world and hear the voices of my soul family, singing their songs through those speakers just for me, it means the world. That's my love language; it’s gotten me through both my darkest and most jubilant times.

It's not about striving for stardom or to be the most well-known songwriter.

Maybe it's about "leaving something dear behind" (to quote the lyrics of "There Ain't No Ash Will Burn.") Songs leave a legacy for those we leave behind to enjoy. And to the ones who love you and your stories most of all, your songs will be priceless.

3 brand new songs that were written this year and 2 of our older songs finally getting a proper studio recording adding up to over 20 minutes of Funky Duck music for your ears!

All the parts were recorded at our respective home studios and mix/mastered by Kenny Eaton and Mystery Ton Studios.

Longtime Funky Duck collaborator Arielle Jones really knocked it out of the park with the paper Mache themed album art.

With both Josh Rosen and Matthew Hallwig becoming new fathers in the past couple months we really wanted to get something out for everyone to listen to while the band takes a brief Hiatus from playing live shows so they can take some time to focus on their families.

‼️Did you know Katie Powderly is releasing her 1st studio album in over 10 years? It’s called “Live by the Song, Die by the Song.”‼️

It will be out on vinyl, CD, and all streaming platforms as of 12.31.23 on Red-Winged Blackbird Records!

As of today, all of the singles have been released.

If you haven’t heard, this album is for the folk, country and bluegrass fans.

Unlike “Slips of the Tongue,” which was fully produced in the studio with a full electric sound, Katie’s newest release is a departure from that approach.

Instead, it’s an intimate, stripped-down collection of songs with sparse but intentional instrumentation.

Acoustic guitar, mandolin, fiddle, a little snare or Rhodes. That’s it.

The emphasis on the songwriting and the singing.

That said, the album contains some brilliant performances from Katie’s collaborators:

Catching riffs at

Underrated technique: room mics on guitars (and bass).  
 
These stereo room mics ~way~ on the other side of the building provide a natural ambience that helps the close mics on speaker cabinets "sink" into the mix. 
 
The end result is not necessarily "verby" or "ambient". Moreso it brings back a touch of extension in the time and spatial domain that reflects how we naturally hear this source in reality. 
 
My favorite side effect of this technique is how panning the close mics becomes far less important. The stereo room mics add an ambiguity to "where" the guitar is coming from in a very pleasing and natural way. 
 
Watch your phase of course and season to taste!
