We're back from vacation, what a great time we had eating at some of the top 10 places in Texas. I got about halfway through writing up the details of where we went and what all the food was like but I got pretty longwinded and realized it would be best to do a quick 1 or 2 sentence comment on each place instead.
St Louis stop at Heavy Smoke. They won the Jack invitational last year and have a massive wall of trophies on display, standouts here was the horseradish white sauce, spicy blueberry sauce, cheesy sausage and brisket eggrolls.
Tulsa, OK. Stopped at Nomad BBQ Deli only to see that they were already sold out of food for the day so we said let's put the hammer down and try to get to Forth Worth for dinner!
Fort Worth stop, Panther City BBQ- one of our favorites. Brisket was one of the most tender, the pulled pork was the best that we had anywhere, and the Tex-Mex items they do are so good from the street tacos to the elote salad. Unique desert item, Nutter Butter cheesecake pudding is a must try. Got the opportunity to talk with the owner for a while and got a tour of the smoker area, all of it very inspiring.
Goldee's, ranked #1 by Texas Monthly and they no surprise they are fantastic. Pork belly with a peach tea sauce was a standout, although all the meats were absolutely perfectly delicious and juicy. Their house baked bread and desert special of bread pudding both get very high marks.
Austin- not BBQ but we went to Torchy's for breakfast tacos and man are they good! Eggs cooked just right and everything is seasoned so well.
Lockhart- the original Black's. On the drive over we saw our first 85mph speed limit sign! Black's has been in business over 90 years and the food is very traditional and has been perfected. The meats are simple and delicious and the sides and deserts taste like the world's best grandma made them just for you.
Back to Austin- Stiles Switch, known for their beef ribs and German influenced sides including a glazed brussel sprout dish, and great hospitality. Again all the meats were very good.
Leroy and Lewis, I was really looking forward to this as they tout themselves as new school BBQ and are so inspiring. They do a lot of unique things such as beef cheeks, barbacoa tacos, whole hog, they butcher their own hogs and offer what known as a bacon rib, not seen very many places at all. Everything here was very good and got to briefly talk with one of the owners, Evan. This was also the first day of heat week, where they make very hot dishes and we got to try a habanero popper, wrapped in bacon and a hot cherry glaze, good stuff!!
Memphis stop- Memphis BBQ company, the ribs were great but we were a bit disappointed in the rest as the overall quality was more of a chain restaurant with lower quality control.
Rendezvous- tucked into an alley and downstairs in downtown, its kind of a neat place that served charcoal cooked ribs served Memphis style, which is dry. Decent quality and the sides were solid.
Gus's Fried Chicken, not BBQ but deserves a mention. Seriously great fried chicken with an almost tempura style batter and the best sweet tea we had.
Murphysboro, IL stop 17th Street Barbecue. Our last leg of the trip and we really loved this place. The staff was so incredibly friendly here, we had a great chat and could tell these folks love what they do. We thought the food was great, baby back ribs, pulled pork, and pimento cheese and sausage app, and wings that are kissed by the grill, just great flavor. The sides were very nice and they even sent out a complimentary piece of bread pudding which was so nice of them and was delicious.
All in all this was a wonderful trip, it was great to meet so many folks making BBQ at the top tier and to sample what are some of the best BBQ, sides, ad deserts out there. Lots of inspiration for me to pull from on this trip, can't wait to get back to it and keep the great food going!
