The weather looks good for next weekend. We have a mounted archery clinic that is just about full for Saturday and just added a POP UP clinic for Sunday covering trail versatility: ranch horsemanship, natural obstacles, and trail.

Call 660-668-0880 or email [email protected] to sign up.

And an FYI, I updated the calendar of events for 2025 on our website. Here is a link. Each event has detailed information except the 2025 Homesteading Expo. More information coming soon for that event. If you are a trail rider, camper, day rider, Chix in the Sticks, or clinic participant, check out the calendar here:

Have a bad ride? Rough day working at the barn? A saddle you want just financially out of reach?

I'd like to take this time to remind you that...

Hunter/jumpers: we ride horses in circles and jump sticks for a living and then we let some person tell us our horse did, or did not, jump the sticks as pretty as another horse.

Dressage: we trot in circles and let someone tell someone else to write down whether or not we are circley enough for the circle club

Eventers: we decided jumping out of an airplane without a parachute wasnt exciting enough, so we run at mach speeds towards walls, ditches, and small lakes to see who can do it fastest.

Barrel racers: we spend all of our time fine tuning our ability to turn 3 times faster than anyone else

Ropers: we catch calves that are technically already caught

Steer wrestlers: we wrestle an animal that didnt even know there was a wrestling match coming their way

Team Sorters: even on our worst day, we didnt spend as much as the cutters.

Reiners: see dressage, add speed.

Cutters: we let several people tell us were better, or worse, at not letting calves hang out with their buddies.

Team penners: we take caught calves, and make them a little more caught

Mounted shooters: because weve used this skill ever in the last 200 years

Endurance: we take 10 times as long, and 10 times more money to get somewhere an ATV could've brought us.

Western Pleasure: we poke around at wine sipping speeds in the equestrian equivalent of a ball gown.

Trail riders: cheers. Y'all have it figured out 🤣

It's not that serious y'all, so just have fun!

Update on the future of Von Holten Ranch.

We decided to take the ranch off the market. David and I have been deeply moved by the outpouring of support, love, and general concern of our wellbeing.

The truth of the matter is that we built a business that is running us rather than us running it. Our guests mean the world to us. We have the nicest people in our lives due to Von Holten Ranch. Our guests are the family that we would choose. A couple that we met at the ranch just vacationed with us in Mexico.

David and I push ourselves to the point of exhaustion. Over the past few years we have tried cutting back to be able to leave time for us. We thought we had to sell the ranch for us to do something different. That decision was always a tearful one because we care about our guests and we love this land.

When we started VHR our end goal was for David to do woodworking. We bought the CNC machine, half built a sawmill and kiln building, and bought a sawmill. We have made payments on the sawmill for over a year and haven’t used the sawmill once. There just hasn’t been enough time.

I always wanted to be a leader in the fitness industry and a motivational speaker. I haven’t had the right mindset or stress level to do what I need to do.

We were stuck between something we love (the ranch), the people we adore (our guests), and working so much that it left us with no time for what we personally want to do.

Rather than selling, we are going to reduce our days open. We will be open for 11 Chix in the Sticks, two outside clinicians, and one homesteading expo.

Campers and trail riders can also come during those events but there will be limited space. Our Chix in the Sticks schedule is posted on our www.vonholtenranch.com website under the Chix in the Sticks section.

I will also have clinics and mounted archery throughout the year that are not scheduled yet.

This allows us to keep the ranch but it also puts our feet to the fire to make our other interests profitable.

I have started a magazine called Country Tough Times that focuses on trail riders, patriotism, and thriving during Country Tough Times. It will be a magazine that contains useful articles that are written by people and professionals I have met over the last decade of owning VHR.

If you would like to be part of the founding subscribers, you could support us at www.countrytoughtimes.com It would also make a wonderful present.

David made a goal of selling 25 custom items starting December 1st. (I think he could make that a quarterly goal, but that’s the difference between he and I). His latest horse obstacle is a bull that has a magnetic ring in its back to mimic spearing. It is built with the guidelines for Working Equitation but could be added to anyone’s personal home obstacle course. David makes custom signs and furniture. You can look him up at www.buildingwithdavid.com The bull obstacle is in the comments.

We also have our online t-shirt, hoodie, and merchandise store at www.country-tough.com

I start a six month health reset on December 1st. David starts putting in a few loafing sheds for our horses and cattle.

We are going into 2025 with a clear mind and an optimistic future.

Happy Thanksgiving. We are grateful everyday to have you and your equine in our life.

Good old horses help make good young horses. We are working on just making everything normal. KTM is calm at the gate which is a good example for Domino to experience.

Domino just turned 7 months old a few days ago.

Our medicinal herbs class was a huge success! Today we learned about several different tinctures, “hot cider”, and did a little fermentation.

We even learned how to make our own surface cleaner. Tiffany Butters always does such a thorough job explaining medicinal herbs. 🌿

Look for NEW upcoming homesteading classes this winter.

The maiden voyage with camping with the entire family is always filled with “is this going to work”, “did I remember everything”, and “are we prepared for the what ifs”.

Von Holten Ranch has always been a great place to work out the kinks, green horses, green riders, novice campers, older equine and riders, and young equine and riders.

If I (Brandy) am available, I can take photos for you. These are the photos the family is not using for Christmas photos. I will send them the “keepers” so they can be the first to share. If you don’t mind the photos not being professional, then I don’t mind taking them. You can also have professional photographers come out to capture your special moments.

This family is special to us; they are also long time friends. We enjoyed a game of dominoes, homemade peach jam, a photo session, and I took a riding lesson from my friend, Taressa. Their middle child was invited to take a lesson with me this afternoon.

Deer season starts tomorrow. We will be open this weekend, but our trails will be CLOSED. You can use the covered arena and the obstacle course. Saturday from 9am-noon we have a medicinal herbs class in the ‘06 (climate controlled venue). If you would like to join the class visit www.countrytoughhomesteading.com

We will be FULLY OPEN December 2-15, 2024.

Chix in the Stick, mounted archery, and trail riders all getting in some much needed saddle and down time.

Karen Cummings did massages that left people singing her praises. Tammy Schrader’s cheesecakes are always photo worthy in addition to being a culinary delight. And our trip to Mrs. Mary Ella’s house for the Mennonite dinner fit for royalty did not disappoint.

Teaching mounted archery 🏹 is always a highlight of mine, the archer, and others that come and watch. JoJo, our MO Foxtrotter mule, has been numerous mounted archer’s first equine to shoot from. 🏹🏆❤️ To book a lesson or to inquire about lessons or clinics email [email protected]

When our TheraPlate is on, our dog and two cats always find their way there to get time on the plate and for snuggles. Spoiled rotten, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Next week we have trail riders throughout the week, but the trails will be closed starting Saturday because of deer hunting season. We have a medicinal herbs class on Saturday. Campers are more than welcome to spend the night and play in the arena and obstacle course, but not the trails. Visit www.countrytoughhomesteading.com to sign up for the medicinal herbs class.

Thank you to everyone for choosing to share these moments with us. We love our guests and love being part of your lives.

The last Chix in the Sticks for 2024. We have a small amount of rain to work around on Saturday which is no problem with the 125x200 covered arena.

Last night was a taco bar, painting class, T-shirts, and CHEESECAKE! Yum! We had turtle, cherry, and pumpkin.

Today, there’s a mounted archery semi-private clinic, which is always rewarding to share my love of mounted archery 🏹.

A complete line of mounted archery equipment and a beginner book is available at www.horsemanshipwithbrandy.com

Lady AKA Ladybug was still in the ATV even though we were in our vehicle leaving.

This dog will ride facing forward until someone else goes to get in with us, then she turns sideways. It’s like she is saying “Sorry. We don’t have room. Guess you’ll have to walk.”

Even though she’s about the size of a propane bottle, she gets on the ATV from the drivers side….barely. She has all the room in the world to get on from the passenger side.

She’s our shadow but LOVES guests, especially the ones that feed her (even though she is obviously 20lbs overweight). Not one mean bone in her body. Ladybug is as sweet as they come.

This tree was struck by lightning. It is on the Orange & White Trail on the east side. We are grateful this did not start a fire 🔥.

Our Story

Von Holten Ranch is a family owned and operated equine trail riding facility. Come and enjoy a breath of fresh air and a return to a simpler time on this century ranch. Trails are well marked and include prairies, wooded hills and natural creek crossings. We pride ourselves in hosting top-notch events in multiple disciplines. Come make memories with family and friends that will last a lifetime.

When David and Brandy Von Holten bought the ranch on December 20, 2013 they literally had to use a chainsaw to get fully onto the property. The farm had not been lived on since 1979. You know how it is easier to give birth than to raise the dead, well they have a new respect for this old saying. Everything was built by David and Brandy. They even bought a sawmill to be able to cut down on limber expenses. There were 8 buildings somewhat up in 2013 from the original homestead. Five of the eight building were taken down and used to create the wedding and event venue. It is heated and air conditioned, has private bride and groom rooms, and has three wheel chair accessible restrooms. The trail riding facility now has a 125X200 covered arena, 4 cabins, 94 covered stalls, 14 uncovered pens, 40 RV sites, and a 12 stall boarding barn. Come enjoy this premiere Midwest Equine Trail Riding Facility with all its wonders.
