Story Time: Meet Rev. David Brown and his sweet wife Lorene - two of my dearest friends in the wedding business.

I started So Chic 14 years ago this month and then, because of the time between bookings and planning and then the wedding rolling around, my first official So Chic wedding was 13 years ago this month. Rev. Brown officiated it which is how we met and we’ve been friends ever since. I refer him to any couple I get a chance to because I know he’ll put such love and care into their wedding ceremony and do it with such joy in his heart. He officiated yesterday’s So Chic wedding (that I can’t wait to share with you!) and as always it was a day filled with love and joy.

Lorene knows I love how I can always count on her chic dress and hat combo at every wedding so she always wears a new hat and sits in the back row until I spot her and from there the day is filled with chatting and laughter and the most kindness from two of the sweetest souls you’d ever encounter.

The last 18 months of being an event planner during a pandemic when your whole job is bringing large groups of people together for milestone events has admittedly been a heartbreaking, exhausting and anxiety inducing chapter of my career. Some days I am just so weary and tired. But getting to do events for amazing people with amazing people sure helps to re-energize and re-inspire me.

Here’s part of the blessing that Rev. Brown always does and it brings me a smile every darn time - I can even recite it in my sleep and hear it in his sweet voice. I hope it brings a smile to you as well. ❤️

A bell's not a bell 'til you ring it
A song's not a song 'til you sing it
Love in your heart wasn't put there to stay
Love isn't love 'til you give it away!

At a loss for words over the perfection of yesterday celebrating Ryleigh and Justin’s amazing wedding day! It was full of style, charm and sweetness. Can hardly wait to see the magic Meredith Washburn Photography captured because it’ll no doubt be one hundred times what I quickly grabbed throughout the day. It truly was such a joy filled day - enjoy a !

This year marks 14 years of So Chic. 14 years of planning beautiful events, carefully choosing every detail, fluffing the bride's train before they head down the aisle, reminding them to breathe before that big important walk, pinning boutonnieres onto grooms, rolling around a big emergency kit ready for anything the day throws at me and being the one my couples or families turn to when they need something, anything, on their incredibly important day. It's a privilege I haven't and will never take lightly. The biggest thank you a couple or family could ever, ever give me is simply telling others about me and my small business. It keeps the business going but it also connects me with even more amazing people I get the privilege of serving.

Imagine my delight when one of last month's magical weddings not only included my amazing bride and groom but 3 other past So Chic couples too! You know I had to grab them all for a pic. The extra bonus? One of the past brides pictured has now worked for me for three years and another one starts working for me in just two weeks and the other two have remained dear, dear friends and customers of mine in So Chic Boutique. I'd say I don't have words to describe what they each mean to me but I think we all know that I usually find plenty of words.

This year marks twenty years since I first entered the wedding business - first renting tuxedos and then selling wedding dresses to pay my way through college. Then I started planning bridal shows, started an event planning business, then started a bridal magazine - needless to say weddings have a pretty special place in my heart and every couple in my years, over 350 of them, will forever be a piece of me.

Grateful for the opportunity and always grateful for amazing vendor friends like Heather McCormick Photography who captures the most special moments! This industry, while tough at moments, is truly, truly special.

I’m admittedly awful at posting around here but that’s because our crew stays plenty busy just keeping up with our clients and making sure we give our events everything they deserve. Pulled off a beautiful one this last Friday with an amazing vendor team and an even more amazing couple! I’ll try to get my act together and post more around here but, when we’re not posting, just know we’re designing and planning and creating all the magic our clients deserve. ✨

I realize we’ve become a bit quiet here but it’s with good reason - it’s because we’ve been so busy working away on our 2021 event season! We kicked it off a month ago and are pretty much in full swing from here on out with just a few breaks in between!

This weekend is a wedding and Bradley University’s Commencement. They called just about 8 weeks ago having made the decision to host in person graduation and brought me in to help on the logistics side. We hit the ground running to ensure we could safely host an event of this magnitude and celebrate these amazing graduates! Between tomorrow and Sunday, 7 different ceremonies will be hosted to celebrate 2020 graduates who never got their chance to be honored as well as the 2021 graduates.

Not only was I honored that Bradley entrusted me to be a part of such a milestone event, I’m incredibly proud of the way they have invested in their students and families to safely host an in person graduation for them to be able to celebrate such an amazing accomplishment.

As a two time Bradley alum and adjunct faculty member for the last fifteen years (cue feeling very old), it made me so proud to step back today and see what we’ve accomplished and know the memories that are soon to be made by these graduates and their families.

It’s been a whirlwind but it’s been worth every layout, site visit, rental order review, virtual meeting, and hours and hours of work.

Let’s get these students graduated!

Huge, huge shout out to Peoria Rentals for amazing ex*****on of a HUGE set up while also being mindful of our spacing and measuring and all of the things. They truly, truly outdid themselves on this one and I was proud to watch it come together!

It's been six months since we did a wedding......quite the winter's nap! But tomorrow we kick off our 2021 season and it couldn't be with a sweeter couple! It's Round #2 for Kalah and Brody! We did a sweet backyard wedding for eleven guests last September and tomorrow they get to say 'I do' all over again but this time surrounded by loads of amazing friends and family!

Let's get back in the wedding groove, shall we!?!

Where we started....and where we finished! Quite the transformation!

This sweet bride and groom called just 3 months ago after their venue canceled on them and they decided to use the groom’s grandparents barn for their wedding but they had no idea where to start.

The bride handed me the reins and said ‘make it amazing!’ I only met her twice in person before wedding day - the day she booked and on a site visit. The rest we did via FaceTime and text and email.

The trust my clients put in me and my vision for them is a privilege I never take lightly and it makes it so worth it when they get to walk in, not knowing at all what to expect, and can’t believe that it’s their day. It’s easily the best part of my job getting to watch them soak it in and it’s the thing that keeps me coming back for more (and honestly the only part that’s gotten me through 2020).

Big thanks to our vendor team who road tripped nearly 2 hours away from our shops and offices to make this day happen for Kelli and Emmitt! 💕

The only way I’ve coped with being a wedding planner during a pandemic.

Just kidding, just kidding. Kind of.

Finishing a double header wedding day today with two beautiful and happy couples! We’re on the home stretch of wedding season with just a few left and, not gonna lie, I’m ready to call it a wrap on the hardest wedding season of my entire career.

I wish I could take this champagne home to pop after my last one of the season but I guess I’ll give it back to the bride and groom since we used it as their fun guest book.

But in about 3 weeks when we wrap up wedding season, I’m gonna celebrate BIG!

Friends - if you know anyone that works in the hospitality industry during this year - give them a socially distanced hug. They probably need it because their worlds have been turned upside freaking down and their businesses have probably hurt more than they’d care to admit.

Phewee what a time to be alive.

How ridiculously cute are these two?!? They’re one of our two couples getting married tomorrow and we couldn’t be more excited for two beautiful weddings.

Fun story about Kelsey’s dress: The dress she ordered for rehearsal came in last minute and she didn’t love it. After running around yesterday trying to find something and not falling in love with it, her mom mentioned her own rehearsal dinner dress from 34 years ago. They pulled it out of the closet, Grandma made a few alterations to it (shortened it, removed the shoulder pads, etc) and Kelsey not only wore it but rocked it at tonight’s rehearsal.

Cannot wait for tomorrow! Our handsome groom is over 7 ft tall so we called in our friends from Create A Scene who built a few 9 ft white trees for their wedding ceremony.

Stay tuned! 💕

Was this not the most beautiful fall day that ever existed?! Holy cow - it was perfection.

The only thing that made it better was that Kalah and Brody said ‘I do!’ in a sweet, laidback 11 person wedding ceremony with loads of friends and family joining them virtually.

Kalah was one of my Bradley students a few years back in my Special Event Planning class and we’ve stayed in touch ever since. When she reached out for me to be a part of her wedding, I was flattered and honored and so dang excited. Then COVID hit and, as we all know, plans for just about everything got turned upside down. Kalah and Brody handled the changes with such grace.

We postponed the big shindig until January but we still wanted today to be their wedding day so in the sweetest ceremony and dinner party ever, we made it happen. To make it even more special, it was hosted in the backyard of the couple’s first home that they just bought in June. Talk about making memories.

I’ll admit, I got teary more than once, it was such a beautiful day.

Congratulations Kalah and Brody - let’s do it again in a few months, shall we!?

I don’t start every wedding day with Casey’s Breakfast Pizza.....

oh wait, yeah I kind of do. Mostly because I always need gas and I put it off until the last possible second which is usually a wedding day when I know I can’t risk running out of gas. Gas + breakfast + a Dr. Pepper with Cream Soda = the makings of a gooooood wedding day.

Off to celebrate in pandemic style at Peoria Marriott Pere Marquette!

Guys wanna hear a funny story about this beautiful bouquet?

I’ve joked with my clients that after a 5 month break from weddings that my wedding planner brain is a bit rusty. They’ve all assured me it’s not but here’s proof that it’s for sure rusty.

Last weekend, I went to present my sweet bride, Megan, with her beautiful bouquet by Create A Scene. Megan loosely knew what her florals would look like but left most of the nitty gritty details to me so it was a bit of a surprise. She and her mom and bridesmaids were all loving on it and touching it and asking what was in it.

I’ve learned a lot about flowers in my 13 years as a wedding planner and I now know about 99% of them (a far cry from the 1% I knew when I first started). I was super proud and happy with how much they loved the bouquet and I started rattling off flowers: garden roses, anemones, eucalyptus, ranunculus. I kept staring at one flower and the name was on the tip of my tongue but my tired, fried wedding brain couldn’t come up with it. It finally came to me and I exclaimed with confidence: ‘Ohhh - it’s listeria!’

They all smiled and went with it and I walked out super proud of myself but also doubting what just came out of my mouth. I’m a firm believer in committing to what you say and really selling it. They believed me.

The name came to me a few minutes later: Astilbe.

Listeria is most definitely a bacteria/infection. We tend to frown upon that in a wedding bouquet. 😂

Can I just blame COVID for the brain lapse? Luckily they all thought it was hilarious and 4 days later and I’m still laughing at myself.

Wedding planner rusty brain syndrome - it’s a real thing.

Hey Mother Nature - I’m so glad we can keep being friends. Thanks for giving us the perfect window of weather for this beautiful backyard ceremony!

Fun side note - this ceremony got moved from the couple’s church to the bride’s parents backyard. The bride, feeling overwhelmed by how many things kept changing for her big day, said ‘Just surprise me with the decor!’

Music to a wedding planner’s ears!

Now that they’re hitched, let’s head to the reception! 💕
