Here in Washington, we don’t typically experience harsh, freezing temperatures that would damage dahlia tubers, but there’s always that nagging worry about rot. Our long, gloomy, and rainy winters are notorious for creating the perfect conditions for tubers to become too saturated, leading to potential rot. 🌧️
So, what’s a flower farmer to do? I always lean towards digging up my dahlias to ensure they’re stored properly and have the best chance of thriving come spring. But each year, it’s a tough call! Share your thoughts – do you dig, or do you leave your dahlias in the ground over winter?

“ ‘I’m going to be my own cheerleader about this, I really am’,” I sobbed to my sister in 2023, sharing my funky idea of starting a flower farm—with no land, no equipment, and a small handful of dahlia tubers. Without hesitation, my sister, my biggest fan, jumped in to help me organize my frazzled brain into action.
Yesterday, FlowerFunk Blooms celebrated its VERY FIRST BIRTHDAY, and what a journey it’s been! From tiny seeds to bountiful harvests, this funky dream has blossomed into something truly magical.
I’m so proud of what we’ve grown—from the bouquets that have brightened homes, to the love-filled weddings, and the joy of flower workshops.
Of course, no adventure comes without its bumps along the way. I froze buckets of flowers, lost entire trays of seedlings, and weeded out full rows of crops. But those tough moments have been my greatest teachers. There is always room to grow—both in the field and in life.
To everyone who has supported FlowerFunk Blooms, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. Your encouragement has meant the world to me, and I’m beyond excited for what lies ahead. Here’s to many more seasons! Live funky. Bloom boldly.
