U.S. FLAGS IN HISTORY:
Grand Union Flag
The first flag of the United States incorporated the British Union Jack along with thirteen red and white stripes to represent the newly formed Colonies. The flag was first flown over Prospect Hill in Cambridge, Massachusetts where George Washington’s Continental Army gathered to repulse the British Army, New Year’s Day 1776.

AMERICA'S HISTORIC FLAGS
Fort Sumter Flag April 13, 1861

The surviving flag at Fort Sumter National Monument.
The Civil War began with the attack on Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor, South Carolina. The flag pole at the fort was toppled by Confederate forces during the bombardment. The American flag had 33 stars, arranged in a unique diamond pattern, representing each state in the Union. After the attack on Fort Sumter, President Lincoln considered removing 11 stars to reflect the seceded Confederate states.

One of the historic U.S. flags our group will often carry: The Betsy Ross Flag. The Betsy Ross flag was an early design for the flag of the United States commissioned by the Flag Act of 1777. The act was passed during the Revolutionary War specified 13 alternating red and white horizontal stripes and 13 white stars in a blue canton. Betsy Ross was an American seamstress who helped design and construct the flag.

GETTING TO KNOW THE MMMCG HORSES AND THEIR RIDERS: Phoenix is a 5yr old red roan Tennessee walker mare ridden by Kaylee, they are from Albion MI. Phoenix & Kaylee joined MMMCG in 2022 but have been partners since Phoenix was 6 months old. Kaylee trained Phoenix her self and this has been her biggest accomplishment yet. Usually the pair just trail rides and does some fun shows. Phoenix loves all the attention and seems to really enjoy parades, she likely would love to lead as she’s always having to slow down to stay in order. Her Favorite treat is hard candy or carrots

MEET THE MMMCG HORSES AND THEIR RIDERS: Sequoia is a 14 year old palomino Tennessee Walker ridden by Melissa, they are from Albion, MI. Sequoia & Melissa joined MMMCG in 2022 and have been partners for the same amount of time. Sequoia was purchased and trained for this position, while Melissa’s other two mounts were out of commission this year. She’s proven to be a very gentle and loving partner. She loves the children most of all.

Hank is a 14 year old quarter horse ridden by Ashley, They are from Sunfield, MI.
Hank and Ashley joined MMMCG in 2022 but have been partners since 2020 and have competed in local speed shows along with a handful of team penning and sorting events as well. Hank enjoys meeting all the new people (especially kids) that come over and ask to pet him in the staging area at parades.

We are looking forward to the 2023 season of parades. Our group shares the historic flags of the United States on horseback and has made presentations of the colors at other venues. We are welcoming to new riders who would like to share this experience. You need a street safe horse who will carry a flag and a way to transport to the parade sites. We tend to select parades in the Mid-Michigan area. Contact us in a private message for more information.

The MMMCG was represented in two different Christmas parades tonight. Three riders rode in the Battle Creek Lighted Parade. Four riders rode in the Portland Parade. These are the last parades for our group this year. See you in the spring!

Bailey is a Buckskin Quarter Horse owned and ridden by Theresa Buckles. Bailey first rode with the color guard in 2021. He loves when speactators tell him he looks like Spirit. He likes his mane and tail to be braided. Theresa has owned Baley since 2018. When not carrying flags in parades he is ridden mostly as a trail horse but enjoys new experiences like working with cows, practicing speed evens and riding along the shore of Lake Michigan. Bailey's favorite treats are anything with peppermint.
