It’s time for our monthly history highlight!🌙🍺

After establishing their brewery and crafting their first beers, Crescent Brewery announced that their grand opening would be on May 15, 1907. They celebrated with a lively party that entertained guests all night. The brewery thrived for nearly two years before facing its first major challenge.

On February 20, 1909, the state legislature passed a local option law that allowed communities to prohibit the sale and consumption of alcohol. Canyon County acted swiftly, voting on August 27 to enforce the prohibition. Nampa was the only city in the county with a majority vote to remain "wet." Crescent Brewery attempted to adapt by selling near beer, but after multiple court cases, it became clear that there was no longer a viable market for their Overland beer.

Soon after, the state legislature passed a full prohibition act, set to take effect on January 1, 1916. In response, Mr. Lockman, the brewery’s owner, began planning to convert the facility into a soft drink manufacturing plant. By July 1, 1915, new machinery was ordered, and production of soft drinks, cider, and grape juice began, marking the transformation of The Crescent Brewing Company into The Overland Beverage Company.

Crescent Brewery History Highlight!🍻✨

Did you know the Crescent Brewery, established in January 1907, has a unique origin story for its iconic beer? On January 15th of that year, the brewery's president and manager, Mr. Lockman, launched a competition to find the perfect name for their beer, offering a prize of fifty dollars. The contest was a resounding success, with entries flooding in from all over the U.S. and even Canada.

By February 3rd, the brewery had received hundreds of suggestions. The committee ultimately narrowed it down to three, with the winning name, "Overland," suggested by Fred G. Mock from Nampa, the brewery's hometown. Mock's offer to craft a compelling story linking the name to the historic Overland Trail was simply "too tempting to resist."

Today, the legacy of Overland Beer lives on in the Overland Room at Brick Office Events. Named in honor of Crescent Brewery's Overland Beer, this intimate space is perfect for smaller weddings or corporate events.
