In keeping with 1.) my “posting about photos”/social media marketing streak and 2.) celebrating coming-of-age milestones for girls, I want to share this bat mitzvah for Eloise.
She is known to the world as Lulu. In fact, if you know Lulu, you might like, “WHAT?! Eloise?!” But yes. (Amazeballs "Eloise at the Plaza" book-themed shoot coming soon this spring!)
It was so fun to photograph this milestone, because I’ve been shooting portraits of Lulu since she was six at the temple’s Sukkot fall festival and covered in sparkly face paint. (In the comments!) She has grown up at her temple performing, volunteering, learning and having genuine friendships.
She has a sparkly Jewish soul. She ascended the bimah with thoughtful and careful consideration, and believe me, that is not how many teens see their bar or bat mitzvah. There was no “I’m faking my way through this to get to my party.”
She actually has a great relationship with the clergy. There was no “rent a rabbi” vibe here. The dynamic duo of rabbi and cantor are a huge part what makes this particular temple so special. They brought their A game. It was amazing to see them lead a service for her.
Instead, she gave (and heard) thoughtful speeches capturing her essence and the season of life she is in right now. She is practicing how to thrive in the world without anyone but her own intelligence, chutzpah and sense of self.
For me to be with her? To make portraits in this very specific phase where she’s figuring out how she will see and be seen in the world? To show her the best version of herself in an image she can hold in her hands? If it’s up to me to capture her beauty, inside and out, then I will strive to rise to the occasion and meet her there in the very best way I can.
Thank you, Lu. I loved being there for you.
