On April 5, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago will perform a free concert at Wentz Concert Hall! As Leningrad came under siege in 1941, Dmitri Shostakovich retreated to an air raid shelter and, astoundingly, composed his "Seventh Symphony." Marshaling a massive orchestra, he evokes the march rhythms of N**i soldiers, citizens’ cries of anguish and, finally, a defiant victory hymn. Carlos Miguel Prieto, hailed for his “extraordinary ferocity and drive” (The Guardian), conducts this gripping score. Tickets will become available on March 21. Tickets are free; reservations are required. To learn more and reserve tickets, please visit https://cso.org/performances/24-25/civic-orchestra/civic-at-wentz-prieto-shostakovich-7/

Only one week left to secure your tickets for Chicago Sinfonietta's "Love Letters" next Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Wentz Concert Hall! Maestra Chen weaves notions of devotion through a symphonic lens with “Love Letters,” a homage to love. Brahms’ unrequited love for Clara Schumann could only be expressed in music, while Mahler’s adoration for wife Alma inspired his sublime Adagietto, offering a profound expression of marital love. Grammy Award-winning bassoonist Monica Ellis is featured in two Chicago Sinfonietta compositions by composers Michelle Issac and Sandra Bailey, including a world premiere. Valerie Coleman, Issac, and Bailey offer their perspectives on filial love, plus admiration and appreciation for strong women everywhere.
