Can you see these tiny bugs? These are called spider mites. Spider mites often have some sort of webbing around the leaves or stem of a plant. The mites themselves are tiny, and are typically orange or brown and black in color. When checking your plants for bugs, be sure to look on the front and back of your leaves. Often, when plants get bugs, it’s because they’re dealing with some type of stress. Perhaps it’s in to much direct sun, or missed a few waters, but stress on your plants will make the likelihood of them getting bugs higher. Make sure before you buy a plant you know about the care it needs! If you spot some mites, wash them off with some soap and water then spray with the Bio-advanced 3 in 1 spray. This product has Tau-fluvalinate in it, which takes care of those soft-bodied insects. Before applying, read the directions. You can also use neem oil when it’s not too hot outside. Having oil on your leaves mixed with our Florida heat can cause even more damage. Have any quest about spider mites? Leave them in the comments!

Hong Kong orchid trees are blooming! These trees make a great focal point in the landscape with their large blooms and nice foliage. They love warm weather and are the official tree of Hong Kong island. Hong Kong’s are deciduous trees and typically flower from November to March and their blooms can be 6 inches wide. These large blooms attract pollinators including hummingbirds. Reaching 40ft in height, this tree will also create a wide canopy and offer plenty of shade. Hong Kong’s are also relatively fast growing trees and can grow 24 inches in a year. Pruning your tree is a great way to maintain your desired shape and ensure they have a good structure. To bloom they need at least 4 hours of direct sun a day, but they can still grow in shade. Using the Sure-Gro 6-8-10 fertilizer will lower the pH and keep the blooms coming.

This gorgeous black swallowtail butterfly just laid her eggs! Female black swallowtails will lay between 200-430 eggs in the span of 30-50 days. After about 10 or so days the eggs will turn dark grey and start to hatch. Black swallowtail caterpillars are bright green with black stripes and yellow spots all over them. The caterpillars eat dill, fennel and parsley. After becoming a mature caterpillar 3-4 weeks later, the caterpillars will form their chrysalis. During this pupal stage the caterpillar will turn into a butterfly! This process will last 10-12 days, once the chrysalis is brown, the butterfly will soon emerge. Then, the butterfly will live 1-2 weeks before starting the whole cycle all over again!

Did you know Bougainville is a winter bloomer in SWFL? Similar to a Christmas Cactus, bougainvillea need the days to get shorter to be able to bloom naturally. Keeping them in the full sun and fertilizing with the 6-8-10 Sure-Gro granular, you can have blooms on your plant. They are also very drought tolerant and don’t like wet feet, so ensure you are planting in an area that doesn’t get much water build up in the summer. The flowers of bougainvillea are actually the small white flowers in the center and the colorful portion are called bracts. Bracts are modified leaves with color, not a flower. Trimming your bougainvillea is a good idea before the growing season, spring and summer. This will keep the shape nice and your plant tamed.

Looking for some beautiful low maintenance plants? Succulents are a great option for a decorative centerpiece inside or outside. They can take shade or sun and come in numerous colors and styles. When repotting your succulent, be sure to have a well-draining soil and a pot with proper drainage. If there is not proper drainage, your plant may get root rot and die. To make sure you are sufficiently watering, feel the first inch of soil before you water. When the first inch of soil is dry, you can water again. Are you going to add some succulents to your plant collection? -

Our Story

Family owned & operated for over 30 years!

In 1984 Gary and Rene Hazelett came to Naples, Florida from Fort Wayne, Indiana with three children in tow. Their passions were family, gardening and business. That’s when Gary stumbled upon a garden center on U.S. 41 named The Garden Exchange. He and Rene engrossed themselves in the business and purchased it along with its sister garden center Driftwood Nursery on 6th Avenue North in downtown Naples. The two were then combined into the existing store at 5051 Tamiami Trail North.

With that said, Driftwood Garden Center was born. In 1998 their second location followed. A custom designed garden center located in Estero, a booming area north of the Naples store. Both locations have proven to be a garden lover’s delight.

Driftwood remains a family owned and operated obsession. With their two son’s now managing the business, along with their extended family of over 90 dedicated team members. Our team has been green thumbs for decades and all are fanatical about personal service.
