I hear wedding bells!!!

So excited for Chris and Tatiana’s wedding tomorrow at

Something I loved about this engagement photo shoot was how game they were for me to shoot the entire session on film. I used my trusty Contax 645 and then had some fun shooting my Holga with flash in full sun!

Looking forward to sharing in their special day tomorrow! It’s going to be incredibly beautiful and I seriously can’t wait!

Thirteen years ago this week I brought a film camera to my dear friend’s wedding (a 35mm Pentax K1000 to be specific).

I was just a guest and wanted to photograph the day with absolutely no pressure.

I had been toying around with the idea of possibly using film in my wedding photography but was a little nervous to make the leap!

I absolutely loved what I got back from the film lab that day and still do today.

Film is so timeless, nostalgic, and beautiful.

Now I’ve been using film in my wedding photography ever since and couldn’t imagine what my journey would look like if I never stepped out of my comfort zone and stretched myself. I am better for it and I hope it shows in my work ♥️

Long time no see…

Haven’t posted on Insta since September, which in social media time is FOREVER!

I have so much to share but sometimes I get caught up on what to say in the caption. I want to be authentic and eloquent in what I share but I’m not letting that stop me anymore.

My intention going forward is to show up on this platform and post even when I’m struggling with what to say ♥️ So today I’m here just to say hello and get things moving!

Before and After…

I’ve always loved this image but knew it wasn’t as strong as it could be.

This photo was taken at a beautiful Birmingham wedding in the spring of 2018.

The couple was living in NYC at the time but had their wedding back home in the south, closer to family.

They chose a taxi cab as their getaway car to pay homage to the city where they fell in love.

I snapped the photo as they were driving away sharing a kiss for all to see.

The street was full of parked cars and I was a little disappointed that the cab didn’t stand out as much as I wanted it to.

But thanks to technology I re-edited the image today and finally transformed the photo to my ideal frame!

Our bodies create miracles✨

I struggle sometimes to find the right words for captions.

Especially when it’s for a post so close to my heart. When I was thinking about what I wanted to say about these images I was reminded of something my incredibly insightful friend said when I visited them for this session.

She delightfully exclaimed all our bodies create miracles everyday and how amazing is that. She is so right.

These two beautiful people are going to be the most wonderful parents in the world and I CANNOT wait to see it happen.

PSA: I’m not asking kids to smile anymore

and I mean it too.

It’s something I took away from my photography workshop this year. I believe it was who was speaking about this topic in his master class (I learned something from all the amazing photographers there so it’s hard to remember).

Most of the time when you ask a child to smile they give a fake smile anyway.

I’ll photograph kids smiling and laughing but I’m not going to stand behind the camera and say “cheese!”

Instead I want to focus photographing families around activities they like to do together and capture authentic moments of them being together as a family.

Ali & Steve love to surf so for this session we went to the beach around sunset with their little ones and a surfboard. The shoot maybe lasted 15 minutes until the kids started to get hungry and these are the beautiful shots I got.

And guess what? I never asked anyone to smile.

My vote is for black and white but I’m dying to know what you think!

Love adding double exposures on wedding days to add an artistic flare.

Shooting film is so magical. Waiting to find out what the images look like after the exposure is taking is something I never get tired of.

The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports

Something you may not know about me - my grandpa, Peter Gifford was a semi-famous horse jockey.
⁣⁣
I have so many photographs of him on winning horses. He raced all over the East coast from New York to Florida. And of course in Kentucky at Churchill and Keeneland.

⁣The first picture is one of my favorite photographs of him. It’s my grandpa (far left) and two of his jockey friends posing for a portrait before a race at Churchill Downs on November 14, 1947.
⁣⁣
He really has an amazing story. Born in England, came to America, started working with horses, became a jockey, married a Kentucky lady, then worked in the dark room taking the photo finish at the racetrack. I’d love to write a book about his amazing life.

Always learning…

I’ve been to countless styled shoots and always left inspired but learning from was on a different level.

He encouraged us to use body language instead of words when instructing the couple. It was hard for me at first because I kept forgetting and relying on what I knew instead of embracing something new.

Everything from this shoot was incredibly thoughtful in design and deeply elegant.

Already looking forward to next Hybrid Collective and learning from more innovative and inspiring creatives in this industry.

Emily & Cole

When Emily and Cole reached out for their annual fall session they specifically asked to have the shoot at their home this year for a very special reason.

Last year their home was in the line of the tornado that hit our beautiful town. Their home was damaged and they weren’t able to stay in it while it was being repaired. Right before the session they were able to move back in and we documented the wonderful occasion!
