"I am honored to be recognized as the USTA Tennessee 2024 Tennis Official of the Year. I began my officiating career in October of 2020, and I have been very fortunate to have worked many tennis events in the different organizations of the sport. With a passion for the game and a deep commitment to fairness, I have had the opportunity to be a chair umpire for many USTA, ITA and ITF tournaments, including the Boys’ 18 & 16 National Championships, the ACC Conference Championships and Professional Futures tournaments.

I’ve always had a love for tennis as a player, a coach of middle school and high school tennis, and now as an official. I always want to help players have a fair and enjoyable experience from the middle school level to the professional tournaments. Another thing I enjoy about officiating is the other umpires I have gotten to know along the way. John started playing tennis when he was 10 years old, whilst on holiday with his family. He quickly got the bug and began playing junior tournaments across the United Kingdom, where he grew up. John received a tennis scholarship to go to Furman University where he became a NCAA D1 All-American, and had a win over John Isner!

Over the last couple of years, he has become much more involved in tennis again, including being on the Adult Tournament Committee for USTA TN. In 2024, John represented Tennessee on the Men's over 35 team at Callen Cup and won a Gold Ball in singles at the over 30 National Indoor Championships, and a Gold and Bronze Ball at the Over 30 National Grass Court Championships. He plays most of his tennis at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, and is enjoying getting to play with his son who has started playing.

Jessica's love for tennis began through playing with her father and brother, which led her to local junior tournaments and eventually playing #1 for Franklin High School. She went on to achieve the #1 ranking in Tennessee and compete among the top players in the South. Her passion continued at Austin Peay State University, where she enjoyed the experience of being a Division I athlete and built lifelong friendships with her teammates.

In 2021, Jessica turned her focus to coaching, starting with her husband and son, which reignited her desire to teach that soon spread locally. She now shares her love of the game by helping others not only develop their tennis skills but also form meaningful relationships. Jessica’s goal is to make every session fun and memorable, while demonstrating how tennis can create bonds that last a lifetime!

"I currently captain two teams in Murfreesboro, the 12U Boro Thunder and 14U Boro Lightning, and have volunteered with the local JTT program for the past 3 years. We have a great group of kids and other team captains in Murfreesboro, and we hope to continue growing.

I started playing tennis as a kid and loved the challenge tennis presents, it’s much different than other sports I played growing up. It’s been awesome to see my kids grow to love the game of tennis as well. Being a JTT captain is a very rewarding experience, seeing each kid have fun and develop their game, and learn lessons for both on and off the court." - Ben Hale
