The evening invites guests to sample seasonal beers, specialty cocktails created by premier spirit providers, irresistible bites from the city’s favorite food trucks and Café 29 while the Take the Highway performs #1 hits from the country and southern rock genre from the Marshall Tucker Band, Loggins & Messina and Pure Prairie League. For those of us that grew up in the NYC suburbs, Sam Ash was a mecca. I bought my first serious gear at the White Plains store in 7th Grade (a baby blue Fender Mustang and a Deluxe Reverb amp) from the money I earned in my newspaper route. A bunch of us knew the founder's sons and I was saddened to learn via this article that Sammy had passed at age 65.

Our drummer in Hip Pocket, Thom Parisi, worked there for years and all of us aspiring musicians would love the hang with him, the manager Spider and everyone else at Sam Ash. Sometimes it afforded a chance at a deal from a recent trade in. And I spotted Noel Redding (Hendrix's onetime bassist in the Experience and a major influence for fellow bass players) at the Ash 48th Street store. Be still my young heart!

So another icon bites the dust, although they still will have a presence as the 4th generation is still in control.

Every *once* in a while, lightening strikes in the music business and it's often a priceless moment, like the 2016-ish one pictured below with (L2R) the master drummer/percussionist Russ Kunkel, yours truly, the Artist Luke Bulla, and the unparalleled Lyle Lovett taken backstage the week Luke released his second solo album, Who Loves You Better. Produced and largely inspired by Bryan Sutton and featuring a literal bus load of Luke's colleagues: the album featured vocal performances by Sharon & Cheryl White, Maura O'Connell, Lee Ann Womack & Sara Jarosz complemented by a veritable A-List of Americana's finest musicians including: Jerry Douglas, Noam Pikelny, Sam Bush, John Cowan, Sam Grisman and Bryan Sutton. Luke and I served as Executive Producers and everybody's favorite mixer Brandon Bell was in charge of the desk at Zac Brown's Southern Ground studio.

Really hard to believe at 20 years have passed since Bob left us. As Peter Frampton rightly notes below, Bob's genius was so evident and can be heard in so many places, even to this very day. I'll walk into the grocery and a Hall&Oates tune would be on or, most prominently his work in Frampton Comes Alive.

In my first visit to Nashville to work in the studio in 2003, Bob joined us along with Tom Hambridge to record 4 songs with Kevin "Dr. C." Crutchfield for an EP we titled "Special Love". Here's a link to that EP, and Bob's magic shines thru every track on keys, guitars and backing vocals (along with Crystal Taliefero, Wendy Moten and saxman Jim Horn. RIP, Bobo, we miss you!

(ps the great news is Bob's son Greg Mayo has carried on the family tradition. He's a good friend and we work together fairly frequently. Greg is an immense talent in his own right with a wonderful legacy to support his artistry. https://gregmayo.net/
