Sierra Storytelling Festival's Local Teller: Shirley Dickard
Friday, June 28th
www.sierrastorytellingfestival.org for tix & info
Shirley is a fourth generation Californian whose ancestors came to the Yuba watershed in 1850 in search of gold. In the 1970s. Shirley and her husband Richard came to the Yuba River to build a self-sufficient homestead along with a small community of back-to-the-landers. In 2020, at the age of 74, she wrote her first novel Heart Wood – Four Women, for the Earth, for the Future, drawing from her background as a gardener, naturalist, local school nurse, writer, historian, community-builder, and editor of the community newspaper. She has learned that while agencies learn from studies, communities learn from stories. Heart Wood is her way of sharing our stories of idealism, struggle, and hope while living with the past, present, and future of the place we call home.

The Sierra Storytelling line up has changed not once, but twice, in the 2024 planning phase. We are sorry to report that Gene Tagaban and Ivan E. Coyote will not be joining this year's Festival due to unforeseen circumstance.

However, We are happy to welcome two tellers that we've never had on the Sierra Stage before; Gayle Ross, a Cherokee teller from Oklahoma and Archy Jamjun, a Moth winner from Chicago. We are also overjoyed to have Eth-Noh Tec, Diane Ferlatte and Bil Lepp return to our neck of the woods.

Gayle Ross is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation and a direct descendant of John Ross, Principal Chief of the Cherokee during the infamous “Trail of Tears”. Her grandmother told stories and it is from this rich Native American heritage that Gayle’s storytelling springs.

The Queen of Storytelling Festivals

Steve Sanfield loved the craft of storytelling, and delighted in the art. Thirty-four years ago he dreamed of bringing the best storytellers from around the nation to a schoolhouse crowning a ridge, and now thirty-fours years later, the Sierra Storytelling Festival is joyously continuing Steve’s vision. Join us the third weekend in July for three days of the art and craft of the best tellers the third weekend in July at the North Columbia Schoolhouse. Early-bird tickets on sale now, sierrastorytellingfestival.org, (530) 265-2826. Loads of volunteer opportunities available; kid’s show on Sunday; Friday and Saturday evening not recommended for young children.

“Sierra Storytelling Festival is a dream for any storyteller/performer. Performing on stage under a ceiling of tree canopies, crisp sails, and blue skies; a warm and welcoming audience; delicious food and craft beer. Add to that a wide blend of stories and music and seriously, why would you do anything or go anywhere else that weekend?"- Kim Weitkamp
