CHARTER MEMBERS OF 1944 DIXON-CONDERMAN VFW POST 2514, and the First Commander - William Pugh

WILLIAM M. PUGH, The First Commander of the Dixon-Conderman VFW Post 2514 Chartered in 1944, during World One. The Current VFW Post in New Bern had been the Drew Dixon VFW Post that had been Chartered in July, of 1931 to honor a New Bern citizen, who died from World War One injuries received during the fighting in the trenches of France.

Lt. Robert J. Conderman, the son of the US Postmaster in New Bern, attended New Bern high school and the University of North Carolina and joined the US Marines in 1939. On December 7th, 1941, Lt. Robert J. Conderman running to his aircraft on the runway at Wake Island was mortally wounded by a Japanese aircraft. Conderman would die two days later becoming the first Marine from Cherry Point, and the first KIA casualty of Craven County and New Bern.

The exploits of Conderman's father, who in his 40s would persist in joining the military, until accepted as a postmaster. But in the Soloman Islands campaign on Guadacanal, Fred Soloman would land with the rest of the Marines and fight at Guadacanal for months. When he came down with Malaria, he was sent to Camp Lejune in Jacksonville, when in 1944 - Capt. Fred Conderman was selected as the 'Fighting Father of the Year' of the Marines. It is in 1944 that the Dixon Post 2030 in New Bern is rechartered as the Dixon-Conderman VFW Post No. 2514.

JULY OF 2021 - Will be the 90th Anniversary of the Charter of a Group of World War One Veterans to honor Pvt. Drew Dixon, who would die at the Osteen Naval Hospital in Asheville, NC. - VFW Post 2030, July 1931.

NOVEMBER OF 2021 - Will be the 77th Anniversary of the Charter of the Dixon-Conderman VFW Post 2514

THIS IS A SPECIAL RAFFLE - To Celebrate the Founding of a Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in New Bern, which was originally Chartered in July of 1931 as the Dixon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2030. In 1931, World War One Veterans were just 13 years into settling into their lives in the Community and had sacrificed much for their Country. The Government had promised the Veterans a Bonus for Serving and in 1931 had Cancelled their Promise. The Veterans of Foreign Wars fought for those benefits, for the Home for Widows and Orphans of the War in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. The Buddy Poppy flower was being distributed throughout the Country for a National Fundraiser effort to help support Veterans still suffering from their Wounds or Were Needy. Veterans of Foreign Wars in the Communities across the Country were also engaged in Youth Programs such as Scouting.

DURING WORLD WAR II - 1944, Veterans of Foreign Wars in New Bern honored the loss of the First Casualty, from Craven County, KIA on December 7th, 1941 at Wake Island, Lt. Robert J. Conderman, with the Renaming of the Dixon Post to the Dixon-Conderman VFW Post 2514. Currently, our Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2514 with Roots back to their founding in July of 1931, will be Approaching their 90th Anniversary as a War Veterans Post in New Bern. The Drawing on July 4th, 2021 at our VFW Post in New Bern will be featured by a Special Patriotic Ceremony.
