I LOVE PLANT DELIVERY DAY! β₯οΈ

.
Hear me out- this may look like your everyday package delivery but just wait, this shriveled and wrinkled box of roots is going to have a major glow up come spring! If Mother Nature plays by the rules ( π€£ ), next year's ranunculus season is going to be gorgeous!

Garden ASMR! π The bees were busy enjoying the cover crop, gathering what they need to support their hive through the winter ahead.

This might surprise you but... 2025 flowers are already growing!
In the garden, these seedlings are putting on roots and preparing for the cold weather they will endure over the winter. As the weather warms in the spring, these plants will break dormancy and start to grow, and in a few months more, start to bloom in June 2025.
Some flowers are quick to bloom - sometimes in less than 30 days! The late spring blooms- well, I'm in it for the long game.

New routines are never easy but flowers help. Just being near fresh flowers has been proven to positively impact mood, emotions and even memory. Is there anyone who doesn't need a better memory?!
A fresh bouquet is not just self care, it's care for the whole family.

"August is the border between summer and autumn." - Tove Jansson
I love the garden during this transitional month. The summer blooms, in shades of pink and cream and light purple, have hit their stride and are blooming with abundance. The fall blooms, in dark moody maroon and rusty orange and saturated golden yellow are slowly making their way into the flower field.
The changes are subtle at first, then undeniable, fall is on it's way. I am soaking in every minute of the beautiful border month that is August.

It seems like only yesterday I was picking tulips in the spring rain and peony blooms were on their way. Now as the dahlias bloom, we are closer to the end of the season than the beginning. Time to soak up the beauty of the late summer season! βοΈ

This weekend was the beginning of fall clean up in the garden.
Flowers and veggies that were no longer productive were yanked from the soil and carted to the compost to make nutrient dense soil for future gardens.
In all the trips back and forth, up and down the garden rows, this is what I noticed- I planted a lot of purple flowers this season. Anise, verbena, lisianthus, statice, dahlias- all purple!
Purple isn't a color I generally gravitate towards but you know what? I love it! It has become one of my favorite colors in the garden this year!
What color do you think I should grow more of next year?

Each year, I trial new flower varieties. Some get a chance to stick around- like the most amazing Zinnia variety I tried this year. Some are a one and done- bye bye Nicotiana.
This bloom is one of those trials. This bloom has the look of a rose but has a MUCH longer vase life. I think this bloom is a keeper for next year! Let me know what you think!

It's raining! π§οΈ I think every farmer and grower in Western PA is doing a little happy dance right now!
Rain, and even lightning, are known to be great sources of nitrogen, a major nutrient needed for plant growth. Rain is also capable of bringing oxygen into the soil, unlocking micronutrients and minerals. As a matter of fact, lightning is sometimes referred to as "Poor Man's Fertilizer" because of its ability to encourage plant growth.
Does this rain put a kink in my well laid out plan for the week? Definitely. Will the plants absolutely love a couple good days of rain? Definitely!...and I will too.
β¨ Bonus points if you know the other weather event that is also called "Poor Man's Fertilizer"

Behind the scenes, flower farming is a dirty job!
The part where I get to play with pretty flowers each and every day is awesome! The part where I get to see how happy flowers make my customers is amazing!
The part where I forgot to scrub out my harvest bucket and now the smell is π€’- definitely not awesome! The part where I am squishing slugs with my bare hands- far from amazing.
I'll keep sharing the beautiful parts of this job- the flowers, the bouquets, and the love of watching things grow. I'll spare you the sights (and smells) of the slug squishing, bucket washing, endless weeding, dirty jobs it took to produce beautiful local flowers.

This past weekend as I was working in the garden, watering plants and doing a little bit of weeding, I noticed how many bees and butterflies and moths were enjoying the recently watered garden.
All afternoon, the pollinators danced a beautiful ballet, gracefully traveling from one plant to the next.
As evening fell, I found these sweet bees snuggled in for a warm summer nap. I love that pollinators come to my garden for a safe refuge. I love to watch the bees and butterflies enjoy the flowers as much as the people I share the flowers with.
Certainly there are plenty of ways to water the garden more efficiently than dragging a hose from row to row. I could have saved myself a lot of time but I would have missed the beauty all around me.
