Attn: Jazz Vocalists & Musicians:

CATHERINE RUSSELL (Vocalist) is the last of the eight faculty members featured this series of profiles of the up-coming, 2018, New York Hot Jazz Camp (for adults) instructional-coaching team. [ https://www.nyhotjazzcamp.com/]

Returning for her second year, Catherine proved to be one of our most sought after, enthusiastically received instructor-coaches. Her return could not be more welcome, exciting or eagerly anticipated by our campers or the members of the rest of our world class traditional Jazz music faculty!

Catherine’s professional life began after graduating with honors from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts; she embarked upon musical adventures with Carrie Smith, Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, Levon Helm, and Rosanne Cash, among others.

Her 2006 debut album Cat (World Village/Harmonia Mundi), garnered rave reviews, paving the way for her 2008 sophomore release, Sentimental Streak. She was a guest on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, PBS-TV’s Tavis Smiley Show, and NPR's "Fresh Air", “Piano Jazz”, “Mountain Stage”, “World Café”, and “JazzSet”. Russell's third album, Inside This Heart of Mine, reached #1 on JazzWeek and Roots Music Report’s radio charts, while also charting on Billboard and reaching #1 on iTunes jazz charts. A fourth album, Strictly Romancin’, was awarded Prix du Jazz Vocal (Vocal Album of The Year) by the French Jazz Academy, Grand Prix du Hot Club de France, and a Bistro Award for Outstanding Recording. That same year Russell won a Grammy® Award as a featured artist on the soundtrack album for the HBO-TV series, Boardwalk Empire. Her fifth solo album, Bring It Back (Jazz Village) received a five-star review in DownBeat.

Catherine is a native New Yorker, born into musical royalty. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was a legendary pianist/composer/bandleader and Louis Armstrong's long-time musical director. Her mother, Carline Ray, was a pioneering vocalist/guitarist/bassist who performed with International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams, and Sy Oliver. Russell notes, “My mother was born and raised in Harlem and my father led one of the leading orchestras in Harlem, which was part of the inspiration for this album.”

In April 2016, Russell appeared at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. to sing the grand finale at the 2016 NEA Jazz Masters Award Ceremony, and then traveled to Los Angeles for a live taping of Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli. Her concerts, “Catherine Russell: Sunny Side of The Street”, at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room in April, which saluted her personal connection to Sy Oliver, were featured on NPR’s “Jazz Night In America.” To support her newest, Grammy Nominated album (her 6th among Grammy Award winners) “Harlem On My Mind”, she did extensive worldwide touring including a tour in as guest vocalist with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis on their annual Big Band Holidays tour.

Not surprisingly they say:
"A wonderfully charismatic performer with
a show-stopping voice." - The Washington Post
"The best blues and jazz singer going today." - The Wall Street Journal

DALTON RIDENHOUR (Piano)
It's no wonder why, or that, the NEW YORK HOT JAZZ CAMP (for adults) has called back Dalton Ridenhour, for a second year, to be our 2018 piano instructor. His playing, his sensibilities, his experience and credits added to his affable nature and his proven ability to coach and inspire our campers and fellow musicians made it an easy call.

Dalton, a Missouri native, has been a student of the ragtime and stride piano tradition since the age of 8. He has been featured at many ragtime and early jazz festivals including The Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival, The West Coast Ragtime Festival, The Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival, and The Blind Boone Ragtime and Early Jazz Festival.

Dalton has degrees from the Berklee College of Music and The Eastman School of Music where he studied with Harold Danko, Joanne Brackeen, Danilo Perez, Joe Lovano and Hal Crook.

He performs locally and internationally and frequently with various groups including Vince Giordano and The Nighthawks, Dan Levinson's Roof Garden Jass Band, Naomi and Her Handsome Devils, Mike Davis and The New Wonders, Goodbye Picasso, and Mona's Hot Four. He has a solo album, "Eccentricity," on the Rivermont Records label.

What Other Are Saying About Dalton:
“Ridenhour is a talented player. I’ll be seeing him again. If you’d like to be transported back in time to hear piano music from a bygone — but still very fresh and alive — age, you should see him, too." -- Jason Crane, The Jazz Session

"Ridenhour’s stride chops take a back seat to no one ..." -- Jack Rummel, Ragtime America

RANDY REINHART (Trumpet, Cornet) #6 in the New York Hot-Jazz Camp's series, spotlighting the extraordinary members of the up-coming 2018 New York Hot-Jazz Camp's instructional faculty.

ATTN: MUSICIANS OF ALL LEVELS. LEARN, NETWORK AND PLAY AMONG NY's BEST TRAD-JAZZ MUSICIANS.
https://www.nyhotjazzcamp.com/

Encouraged by last year's campers, New York's only Hot-Jazz Camp, for adults, is excited that Randy Reinhart will be returning for his second year as the camp's cornet-trumpet specialist. It's no surprise that last year's campers felt they took away so much from his lifetime of professional, Hot/Trad-Jazz experience for concerts, recordings, festivals and mentoring.

He's been playing cornet and/or trumpet since he was nine and played his first gigs when he was a teenager, making jazz his profession at age 18 by becoming an ongoing substitute at Eddie Condon's legendary club on 54th street in 1973.

In 1976 Randy learned that the trombone position with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band was open and he taught himself that instrument and then spent the next ten years with the Cullum group filling the trombone position and second cornet.

He has played with some of the finest players on the New York scene including Vic Dickenson, P*e Wee Erwin, Herb Hall and drummer Connie Kay. In the mid-1970’s he began doubling on trombone while touring with Paul Lavalle's Band Of America, as well as having played with Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks, and performing at Michael’s Pub, Lincoln Center and Dick Hyman’s Jazz in July series at the 92nd St. “Y”. He has toured with Ed Polcer and with Warren Vache, Jr., as well as with Banu Gibson’s Hot Jazz.

You can hear his cornet in many Bix Beiderbecke tribute recordings and in concert orchestras. The Arbors release, “Celebrating Bix”, places Randy with three cornetists, Jon-Erik Kellso, Randy Sandke and Dan Barrett.

He has collaborated with many other artists too, including Kenny Davern, Marty Grosz, Bucky Pizzarelli, Dan Barrett, Jake Hanna, Howard Alden, Warren Vache.

Randy Reinhart can be heard on various recordings for the Arbors, Audiophile, Jump and Nagel-Heyer labels.

At present Randy does not have a website.

Attn. Friends of Sidney Bechet and Trad-Jazz & Dixieland Musicians:

Drummer, Rob Garcia is this week's faculty member being featured among the New York Hot Jazz Camp's many, noteworthy, 2018 instructors. Come learn and play with some of NYC's finest and surround yourself with a network of your comparably able peers.

Capital New York called Rob Garcia, "one of New York’s great jazz drummers and composers.” He’s a strong presence in the New York and international jazz scene as a sideman, a bandleader and even as an avant guard, featured experimental percussion soloist. Yet while his musical endeavors span the full spectrum of jazz, his work and experience in the traditional jazz world is also extensive and highly respected and sought after.

He has performed and/or recorded with many important groups and band leaders in the traditional (Hot) and swing scene including Woody Allen’s New Orleans Jazz Band (8 years), Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, Wynton Marsalis, Catherine Russell, Wycliffe Gordon, Bria Skonberg, The Manhattan Ragtime Orchestra, Anat Cohen, Professor Cunningham and his Old School, Tamar Korn, Gordon Webster, Gordon Au and is a member and the principal arranger for Svetlana and the Delancey Five.

Naturally, therefore, the New York Hot Jazz Camp is especially delighted to have him on board, in his inaugural role, as our drum instructor for the 2018 session.

Rob grew up in Pelham, New York, hearing jazz and popular music from the 1920's and 30's via his father who is an architect, bass player and collector of 78 records from that period.

He has performed and/or recorded with many important groups and band leaders in the traditional (Hot) and swing scene including Woody Allen’s New Orlean Jazz Band (8 years), Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, Wynton Marsalis, Catherine Russell, Wycliffe Gordon, Bria Skonberg, The Manhattan Ragtime Orchestra, Anat Cohen, Professor Cunningham and his Old School, Tamar Korn, Gordon Webster, Gordon Au and is a member and the principal arranger for Svetlana and the Delancey Five.

EVAN CHRISTOPHER (CLARINETIST) combines virtuosity, immaculate taste, and enthusiasm with a commitment to exploring the full range of possibilities in the New Orleans clarinet tradition. His highly personal brand of “contemporary, early jazz” extends the legacies of early Creole clarinetists such as Sidney Bechet, Barney Bigard, and Omer Simeon.

Critics remarking on Christopher’s dynamic expressiveness have coined his style “close-encounter music” (NEW YORK TIMES) and have called his respect for the music traditions of New Orleans, “a triumph, joining the present seamlessly to a glorious past.” (THE OBSERVER, UK).

He is a veteran performer of far too many esteemed concert performances to do justice here; but, in New York, alone, he has been enthusiastically welcomed repeatedly by audiences and fellow musicians in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall and Symphony Space to the Ear Inn.

His diversified freelance work includes gigs with musicians such as Al Hirt and veterans of Preservation Hall to funk and brass bands including the Nightcrawlers and Galactic. He appeared nightly for three years with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band and recorded several public radio programs for "Riverwalk: Live from the Landing".

His European based quartet fuses Gypsy Swing with Latin-tinged grooves of New Orleans and was distinguished for an acoustic intimacy paired with driving swing. Three CDs they produced were for Lejazzetal (London), in partnership with Frémeaux & Associés (Paris)—Django à la Créole (2007), Finesse (2010), and LIVE! (2014)—earned the group critical attention worldwide for its elegant character.

The NY Hot Jazz Camp is honored and delighted to have his extraordinary talent and good fellowship in our 2018 faculty.
