Climb Aboard the Riverboat Louis Armstrong

Now open, the Riverboat Louis Armstrong will be jazzin’ on the river as New Orleans’ newest venue for large-scale events, weddings, conventions, private parties and music events, including a Louis Armstrong gospel jazz brunch on Sundays. The approximately 3,000 passenger-vessel is one of the largest riverboats in the region and four decks high. You can follow the Riverboat’s journey on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

After spending almost 20 years as a riverboat casino in Evansville, the vessel required a lot of remodeling upon arrival to her new home. When she arrived in Louisiana, our crew began the removal of over 900 gaming machines throughout the vessel as well as demolished all surfaces including walls, floors, ceilings, bars, bathrooms, a deli, and cashier counters. A brand-new floor plan was created that would accommodate everything from large scale concerts to small, intimate functions. The interior you see now is entirely brand new from top to bottom, including the wiring from the security cameras, electrical systems, and audio. All lighting on the Riverboat Louis Armstrong is brand new and wired to a digital control system that can be customized for any event or concert. To revive the exterior of the boat, the crew draped, sandblasted, and grinded the entire exterior of the vessel. All four decks were refinished with non-skid material to provide top safety for our staff and guests. The exterior walls were painted white and the trimming of the boat was painted a bright red with the pavilion of the top deck painted yellow. All safety equipment was updated including life rafts, life jackets, and two new rescue boats. Three engines and two generators were overhauled and the radiator underneath the boat, that is used to clean the engines, was rebuilt. The biggest addition to the exterior are the 30’ x 30’ Riverboat Louis Armstrong logos applied to the sides of the vessel as well as a 12’ tall image of Louis Armstrong on the back of the pilot house.

Why Louis Armstrong?

The Riverboat Louis Armstrong fulfills a dream for Warren J. Reuther, president and CEO of Hospitality Enterprises New Orleans. He recalls hearing and reading about Louis Armstrong when Louis was a teenage hopping onboard one of the Streckfus Steamers as a deckhand and scurrying to sneak among the jazz musicians for a chance to play his trumpet with them. Born in New Orleans in 1901, Louis Armstrong received his first musical training aboard the riverboats of the Crescent City, soon becoming one of the most successful musicians of all time. As he travelled the world, he never forgot what it means to miss New Orleans. In honor of the man who became one of New Orleans’ most iconic and beloved musicians, the Riverboat Louis Armstrong dedicates its third level to a foundation room with historic photos and highlights honoring the memory of Satchmo and his musical legacy.
