800 North Claiborne has been a staple in the Faubourg Tremè community for many years. Historically, Faubourg Tremè and Claiborne Avenue served as an important African-American shopping district. 800 North Claiborne Avenue is a building that in its many years has been of much value to the area. Built in 1924 for use as a bank branch, the Tremè Market Branch, held the accounts of many of the residen
ts and businesses in the area. Once the bank closed in 1953, it was transformed into Pizzo Leather Shop. In the 1960s, Pizzo Leather was one of 132 businesses along an eight block stretch on Claiborne Avenue. The Tremè Market Branch will be managed as a cultural art center; rotating art exhibits showcasing Mardi Gras Indians, Social Clubs and other aspects of New Orleans and Southeast Louisiana heritage. Various events will also be held at the building like wedding receptions, family events and meetings. Consider hosting your next big event at this location once it's restored! 800 N. Claiborne will also be a place of education and cultural enrichment. We will work closely with the community to provide services as well as a location for various activities. There will be many uses for this building and all will benefit the City of New Orleans and the Tremè neighborhood. It will be a tribute to the people of New Orleans, Tremè and Lafitte neighborhoods.
There is A LOT of work to be done and once finished, as a community we can sit back and be proud that we worked together and restored such a historic landmark.
