WWOZ is thrilled to announce that our beloved station is relocating and will occupy the entire top (fifth) floor of The Jax Brewery Millhouse building located at 600 Decatur Street.

“This is a world class location for our world class station,” said Beth Arroyo Utterback, General Manager of WWOZ. “With over 7,000 square feet of interior space and exclusive use of balconies and terraces overlooking the French Quarter and the Mississippi River, it allows us space for our entire staff under one roof, beautiful studios for our show hosts and musicians, as well as room for volunteer projects and meetings. It also gives us the opportunity to add picturesque views to our award-winning programming.”

“This new landmark location is a win for the WWOZ family, our community, and our growing worldwide audience,” said Judge Sidney Cates, WWOZ Board Chair.

WWOZ will operate temporarily from the third floor of the Jax Brewery while renovations and studio buildout are completed on the fifth floor.

"On behalf of our partners, The Berger Company is thrilled to welcome WWOZ into its new home at the Jax Brewery Millhouse. As 'Guardians of the Groove,' WWOZ reflects and defines the cultural identity of New Orleans. Their continued presence along the French Quarter Riverfront is a tremendous benefit to the iconic Vieux Carré," said Ryan Berger, Vice-President of The Berger Company.

WWOZ will officially say goodbye to its French Market location at the end of November with a celebratory Second Line led by some of the city’s most iconic musicians and culture bearers.

“The boards of New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation and WWOZ jointly extend our thanks to the French Market and the City of New Orleans for providing the station with a home in one of New Orleans’ most venerable buildings for the past 18 years,” said Tara Carter Hernandez, Chairman of the Jazz & Heritage Foundation Board.

“Special thanks to our incredibly talented and intrepid realtors Mike Siegel of Corporate Realty and Chris Ross of Latter & Blum who helped us navigate this yearlong search for our new home,” said Utterback. “Many thanks also to WWOZ Board Finance Chair David Kerstein and Robert Steeg of The Steeg Law Firm for their invaluable counsel throughout this important process.”

About WWOZ:
WWOZ 90.7 FM is the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Station, a community radio station currently operating out of the French Quarter in New Orleans. WWOZ's mission is to be the worldwide voice, archive, and flag-bearer of New Orleans culture and musical heritage.

WWOZ was born in 1980 in a room above Tipitina's nightclub in uptown New Orleans. From 1984 to 2005, they were based in Armstrong Park, and after Hurricane Katrina relocated to the French Market, in the city's famous French Quarter. WWOZ’s programming, live festival coverage, and Festing in Place series have become an integral part of New Orleans culture, and reach millions of people each year, both in New Orleans and in over 190 countries around the world.

About Jax Brewery:
Located at the site of the former Jackson Brewery on the Mississippi River, Jax Brewery is host to immense history and culture. The Jackson Brewery was designed and constructed by German-born and educated architect Dietrich Einsiedel in 1891 and was the largest independent brewery in the south and the tenth largest single-plant brewery in the country. The brewery was in continuous operation for 80+ years and was the only New Orleans brewery to survive Prohibition by producing soft drinks before returning to its roots of producing JAX Beer. Today, the building is no longer an active brewery, but is home to a combination of retail, dining, event space, and office spaces.

A message from WWOZ General Manager Beth Arroyo Utterback:

Six years ago today I started as GM at our beloved WWOZ.

It’s such a truly special, energized place filled with creativity and people I love and respect.

I’ve heard from so many of you in the past week who have read the recent press and media reports about the significant setback WWOZ has suffered regarding our new location for the station.

Please know that I am doing everything I can to ensure that WWOZ (after 42 years) finally gets the kind of home that is deserved and long-overdue for our internationally beloved and supported station.

I’m grateful for the incredible staff, show hosts, volunteers, musicians and worldwide supporters I’ve met along the way who are now my friends!

Thank you to all Guardians of the Groove! Much love always!

On May 30, 1958, 65 years ago today, the great Scottish singer Jeannie Robertson recorded a session with Alan Lomax. Hear it, along with Robertson's other recordings for Lomax, at the link:

https://archive.culturalequity.org/person/robertson-jeannie

Regina Christina Robertson was born into a Traveller family. Like many in the cultural/ethnic group of "Travellers," they spent half the year in Aberdeen and the other half on the roads in a caravan going "up the Dee and doon the Don," where communal campsites were often the occasions for song-swapping and storytelling. She gained a reputation as one of the best singers in the Traveller community, and when Scottish folklorist Hamish Henderson sought traditional singers in 1953, he was directed to Robertson. He in turn alerted Alan Lomax, who was then living in Britain, and both Lomax and Henderson made extensive recordings of her. She became a foremost source singer for the folk revival, and in 1968 was awarded an MBE for services to folksong, the first traditional singer to receive the honor.
