Time to time I really like to talk about some of the incredible people in my life, today I’d like to talk about my friend Dalton Dalton was introduced to me in 2015 if I’m not mistaken and we became fast friends.Dalton works in the flower shop every Sunday and does a great job he has learned so much so fast. The rest of the week Dalton is a fabulous artist who can recreate in his own style anything that’s commissioned for him to do.His magic hands and attention to detail are the best I’ve personally ever known, that’s his professional side, his personal side may be as amazing as his artistic side.He is loyal, honest, engaging, and humble. He is always dependable and goes out of his way for you even if he’s swamped with work.Yeah he’s got some edges don’t we all,he can sometimes be defensive, combative but from what I’ve witnessed these occurrences have been all due to his need to always do his best.So in summation simply put an artist among artists and a true loyal friend I lean and depend on often. So if your near my flower shop at 139-west 28 street NYC on any given Sunday pop your head in and say hi to Dalton.

Good afternoon..It’s mid-week already, the time just flies and flies,it’s 1984 I’m holding my baby girl,I blink my eyes it’s 2013 my baby girl is holding her baby girl,I so want time to slow down, why doesn’t time take a step back and let us all exhale? What is times rush anyway?I mean it’s endless right,I feel like our lives are ticking away like any ordinary clock, only difference being that we are all unique, far far from ordinary.A lot of people do extraordinary things,a lot of people do heroic things,do charitable things and on and on,a clock is always just a clock, tic tic tic tic,we are all so much more.Let’s all make the best of our time for it flies and flies,it can be such a glorious ride especially if we stop looking at that clock.

I’m at home sitting on my screened porch, there is a violent thunderstorm out here in Toms River and I’m searching my mind on how to write the next chapter in my flower life. A large clap of thunder caught my attention. I realize it’s ok to tell the turbulent parts of my flower story, too. 12-16 years old was scary for me. In everybody’s journey as well as mine-it was not all roses and smiles. As a young teen there was a large mix of good and bad, excitement and fear, and important life decisions that although so young was my decision solely to make. As I’m writing these memories, thoughts are flying through my memory a mile a minute and I feel like I could write for hours and still not cover everything.I will be as brief as possible and leave out all the specific details but mention different occurrences that are more significant to my journey.
There was me making my first wedding bouquets and corsages at 12, there was learning and making funeral flowers at 12 and 13 (which came along with me seeing many dead bodies at McManus funeral). There was June 30,1973 at 14 when I got hit by a car on Ryder Street in Brooklyn while carrying 2 shopping bags of Pabst blue ribbon beer to take to my friends. How on that same night limping out of the hospital, I got permission to smoke ci******es from my mom. How that September there was a teachers strike at my new school (Nazareth High School) and how that was the beginning of the end of my academic life. How at 15 I stole $100.00 from my parents and ran away from home. How at 16 I quit school and dove into the flower world feeling it was my only option, and how at 16 in Gallagher’s bar I had a defining moment that would set my course in life that has directed me through the years to who I’ve become to this day. Im sorry if this seems too personal and boring, but it has everything to do with my next 46 years in the flower world, and quite honestly feels so therapeutic releasing all these memories in words. In closing, will say that at 14 my self-esteem and self-confidence was at an all-time low, but by the middle of my 16th year both were at a high and I knew exactly what I had to do.

I was a month shy of 9 years old walking down Flatbush ave in Brooklyn when I decided to step into marine florist and ask for a job,Leon the owner who I’ve seen many times but didn’t really know he said hey kid you know how to make boxes,I said I could learn I’m sure and he said ok your hired, just like that I had my first job and I remember being so excited till I followed him to the basement,he showed me how to put together the rose and corsage boxes and left me down there alone for hours only calling me upstairs to sweep the shop or run across Flatbush ave to get coffee fir the guys. This continued every saturday and Sunday in the spring and summer of 1968,he would give me $5 a day plus whatever change was left over from the two or three coffee runs I made a day,I absolutely loved it,I was learning the flower business, learning how to play poker with my adult co-workers,and even started smoking ci******es all at the age of 9.I always had a few bucks in my pocket and could buy anything I wanted I was on top of the moon.Slowly i started doing real flower stuff WOW was awesome, little stuff in the beginning like greening bowls with mountain laurel then as I gained speed and technique they let me start messing with flowers,by 11 I was making small cheap flower arrangements and feeling like one of the guys, they still treated me like a punk Brooklyn kid and tossed me around a bit but they accepted me as one of them and let me play poker with them after work on Friday’s oh and smoke a cig or two.How cool was this I remember thinking ,having the time of my life.So anyway this is the very beginning of my journey of 53 years in the flower world and if your interested would love to post periodically this long journey that continues as I write this.

I want to start this post by saying how heartfelt and loved I’ve felt over the last few days.I am very late to the life of social media and rarely ever look at it.I have been reading all these messages the last few days thanks to my other daughter Autumn showing me how to find them and I am overwhelmed by all the beautiful responses.I have three children and six grandchildren and love and are proud of them all.As a parent and grandparent just like all parents and grandparents we love protect nurture and brag about them all.I have been blessed with all my children and have had the pleasure to see them grow into responsible adults not without bumps and obstacles along the way like every family.
I want to first thank Brandon the humans of New York creator and all around great guy,I was quite busy the day he came to see me and my daughter, and he was so gracious and patient as I ran around the store. He then took a bunch of photos and said he would be in touch. As a man of his word he contacted Holly a few days later and they had a lengthy conversation.A few days later my daughter Holly called me and said the post came out,and from there all this love came pouring in,so next with an overwhelming amount of gratitude from the bottom of my heart I want to thank everyone for all their sweet posts and kind words I’ve never felt so loved,I’ve lived my 62 years believing that their is positive energy and goodness in all of us and after reading all these comments that is now confirmed.Lastly I want to say to my daughter Holly I love you and you have melted my heart to liquid,so much I can say about all my children I love all three of them equally, for Holly to open herself up publicly and display her emotions is the best gift a father could hope for.I am truly blessed.
