Did you know that Anthony Brownie was a zookeeper?

In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re putting the spotlight on Mary Wilson, the first female Black American senior zookeeper at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, circa 1966.

Mary worked primarily with mammals —elephants, cats, and gorillas. After 38 years, she retired in 1999 from the Maryland Zoo, which still has two otters named after her: Mary and Wilson. (source/photo: African and Black History AfricanArchives)
