With the last concert in my baroque series coming up, I wanted to highlight the special cocktail menu created by with mixologist and author of culinary history advising.
Coming up with a baroque-inspired menu was a challenge because the era predates distillation! But the silk road spice trade was booming - a perfect excuse for spice and botanical-forward cocktails, with ingredients from Standards' own spice farm upstate.
We started by combing through a 1694 cookbook for recipes that sounded timelessly tasty. Lo and behold, Standard already had nearly every botanical already on hand. Taras added them to their own distilled spirits to create custom macerations, and balanced the cocktails from there.
We landed on some delicious combinations that never would have occurred to us without the 17th century inspo, like the spicy kick in the strawberry cocktail, which comes from "grains of paradise," of the ginger family. Or balancing sour cherries with the warm funk of myrrh and muskroot (our stand in for ambergris, which is illegal, not to mention icky).
What a fun collaboration! If you haven't tried them yet, August 11th is your chance, though you may be able to sample them another day if you ask nicely ;)
