One day when I was taking care of my mother at the end of her life, I went out to Veniero’s Italian pastry with my high school friend Mindy. Over cappuccino and cannolis, we talked about life. I had brought some of my mother’s necklaces to untangle. Mindy commented how untwisting and untying these necklaces was like the work we were doing together untangling problems in our lives. Ever since, when I go to sort through my jewelry, I am reminded of her, and how good friends enable the untangling of difficult life threads.
