“It’s really important for us to care for them as humans within that framework of a ballet school. I just think life is messy, and life is hard, and ballet is beautiful, and ballet is hard. "And so 'Glass Pieces' shows us a line of dancers inching past the graph-paper backdrop like a roll of ticker tape, a human traffic jam that looks only too programmed, a grid of patterns ending finally in an onset of modular units of dancers dancing building-block choreography," wrote Anna Kisselgoff in a review for The New York Times following the world premiere of Jerome Robbins' Glass Pieces in May 1983.
