"Yet above all 'Vienna Waltzes' is the kind of ballet that will send you dancing into the street, and the contagion is set by the dancers themselves." writes Anna Kisselgoff for The New York Times following the ballet's 1977 premiere.

In his New York Times review of the 1976 premiere of George Balanchine’s Chaconne, Clive Barnes remarked, “The choreography for this divertissement is essentially organic. The ballet unfolds, unfurls, develops—it does not merely happen. The inevitability of movement, the sheer momentum of gesture, this is why Chaconne is such a rich and gorgeous work."

In a New York Times review of Christopher Wheeldon's After the Rain Pas de Deux following its premiere in January 2005, John Rockwell writes, "One goes on about the music because it's so beautiful, because Mr. Wheeldon works so sensitively with it and because he has created a ballet that is as full of choreographic invention as the scores are full of musical invention."

When Mikhail Baryshnikov expressed interest in another collaboration with Jerome Robbins, Robbins said he had "an idea for a little dance." The result was A Suite of Dances, inspired by Robbins' love for Bach and featuring a solo dancer and cellist sharing the stage.

"Mr.Balanchine knows [Maria Tallchief's] capabilities so well that he has really created a role for her that is hard to match, and she dances it like a million dollars. On second thought, make it two million... Miss Tallchief has been a fine dancer for some time, but here she has really outdone herself. It is no wonder the audience shouted itself hoarse," reported John Martin for The New York Times following the 1949 world premiere of George Balanchine's Firebird.
