Better known as F.P.A., Franklin P. Adams was a member of The Algonquin Round Table, as well as one of the most famous writers at the time. He contributed to the New York Tribune, New York World, and New York Evening Post. Adams’ most celebrated columns were “Always in Good Humor” and “The Conning Tower,” which often shared insight into his personal life.

Founded by Ruth Hale, The Lucy Stone League was a feminist group that advocated for the legal right of married women to keep and use their maiden names. Members included Hale, Jane Grant, Neysa McMein, as well as male Round Table associates Heywood Broun and Franklin P. Adams.

In 1956, when Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe were composing the score for My Fair Lady, music flowed out of Suite 908 at The Algonquin for days. They even worked 24 hours straight to write “I Could Have Danced All Night,” which prompted a threat by Ben Bodne, owner at the time, to remove the piano from the room if they didn’t quiet down.

In 1922 the members of the Algonquin Round Table put on their own Broadway show, No, Sirree, at the 49th Street Theater! It was a one-night-only performance that featured short skits and comical songs by members of the group with appearances by stars such as Tallulah Bankhead and Helen Hayes.

Heywood Broun was the MC. The first number was a parody of Eugene O’Neill’s plays Anna Christie and The Hairy Ape called The Greasy Hag. It featured an all-male chorus line of Franklin P. Adams, Robert Benchley, Marc Connelly, George S. Kaufman, John Peter Toohey (a theatrical press agent), and Alexander Woollcott.
