Thinking about all the changes that have taken place over the years in the Dj world , going from vinyl to cd to laptop.
So many genres making there way into the music spotlight. Makes me wonder a lot, about the days of when you carried 2-3 crates of records that were all hand picked from your collection cuz you knew they were party bangers! The choices we made to move the crowd were crucial!
Now a days you have a lot of people that just plain don't belong in that booth, making preplaylists , letting songs go til they fade out on there own then just slide the fader over to the next track with no skill in beat matching, no talent in song selection. Just standing there getting wasted off free booze and trying to pic up ladies.
I mean yeah you can play what they all hear on the radio but what happened to playing the B-side of the record? Taking a risk with a new track or remix?
When you have a program that does it all you can't fail, but there's one thing the program doesn't come with and that's PASSION!!!
You can have 20,000 tracks on your laptop and external but what good are they if you can't put them in a seamless sequence like the old school mixed tapes of the 80s and 90s!
I remember a day and time when you went to a place cuz you knew a certain Dj was performing, giving it his all, sweating up a storm in a fury of reading the crowd and looking for the next track that was gonna keep them going like when you got that urge to go to the bathroom but the next song WAS YOUR JAM!!!! And then the next was your ish!!! And you danced into the wee hours of the morning !
DJing is an art form and djs are in fact musicians! Turntables are instruments! Cuttin and scratchin, mixin and matchin blendin and bendin are all skills of a Dj like pianist rolls his fingers off of the black and white keys or a guitarist plucks at those strings!!!
Many worked so hard to be recognized and respected as djs like grandmaster flash, jam master JAY, Mix Master Mike, Dj red alert , Chuck Chill out , Z-Trip, Roc Raida, Dj Boris , The Executioners , Cut Chemist ,Dj shadow ,lil Louie Vega ,Qbert , Carl cox
The list goes on for ever!!!!
Yet here we are 2013 and as the new wave of Djs who play at bars and clubs throughout the world slam tracks together like sumo wrestlers and there beat matching is that of a train wreck !!
DJing is more than a job and to be a Dj means more than just pressing play, I hope this gets out to some people who are as passionate about this as I am. This isn't a hobby. It's a lifestyle and it needs a voice!!!!
Pls share this were a dying breed.
Remember putting an iPod on shuffle it doesn't know what you really want to hear next it's just doing what it's programmed to do.
We do. what you the party goers, want us to do!
Thank You
