• This image from our Historic Image Archive’s “John T. Krawchuk Collection: The West Village Waterfront in the Early 1990s,” captures 439-445 West 14th Street, also known as the New York Biscuit Stables building. This easily overlooked building has a surprising history that was about a century ahead of its time. Built in 1892 by John Jacob Astor as stables for , this structure housed an innovative fleet of electric cars for the cookie manufacturing giant in the 1920s.
When this photo was taken in the early 1990s, 439-445 West 14th Street was being used as a CECO's film equipment warehouse.

In the early 2000s, Village Preservation conducted research that led to the designation of the Gansevoort Market Historic District in 2003. This historic district consists of about 110 buildings and is distinctive for its architectural character.
