Gibney presents the world premiere of Chilseong Saenamgut (Duringut): Ritual for Sickness, created by award-winning traditional and contemporary arts performer Dohee Lee, artistic director of Puri Arts. The work is a performance ritual inspired by the sacred rituals originating in the artist’s hometown of Jeju Island, Korea. The ceremony, which features Lee performing along with three musicians, and a ritual altar, continues the exploration of ritual performances she began in 2004.

Chilseong Saenamgut (Duringut): Ritual for Sickness is supported by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, REDCAT, Hewlett 50 Arts Commission in Music, NEFA National Dance Project, MAP Fund, Guggenheim Foundation, California Arts Council, and the Puri Arts community.

Daina Ashbee's J’ai Pleuré Avec Les Chiens (Time, Creation, Destruction) ⬇️⬇️

🗓: January 13-14, 2023
⏱: 8:00PM EST
📍: Gibney: Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center
The Theater (Studio H) 280 Broadway

General Admission: $20-$25
APAP Presenters: $10

Naked bodies–animal energy–immediate emotional states. In her first group piece, Ashbee stages a human herd that oscillates between intense physicality and touching tenderness. The full nudity throughout the performance exposes the tension of muscles, but also vulnerability, openness and transformation. The starting point is the exploration of a sensation: seeking solace in the embrace of one’s dog, howling with this companion species.

❗The performance contains nudity❗

“Moundscapes” by Kathy Westwater ✨⬇️⬇️

🗓: December 8-10
⏱: 8:00pm EST
🎟: $15 – $20

Moundscapes reprises choreographic fragments from past iterations of PARK, a nearly fifteen-year inquiry into the site of Fresh Kills Landfill that contends with themes of environmental trauma, grief, and complicity. The piece includes a duet performed atop “tree shoes,” towering platform sandals fabricated from salvaged tree branches that reference 16th -century chopine sandals and an early era of excess consumption. The work also features a new extended solo performed by Westwater, that engages a mass of the artist’s own discarded household textiles.
