LESSER IS MORE WITH HER OWN LINE OF FLAMENCO COSTUMES

Sally Lesser, a veteran theatrical costume designer (and wife of noted stage director George Ferencz), studied Flamenco for ten years and only recently discovered that there is a shortage of seamstresses in NYC to make custom garb for practitioners of the dynamic dance

genre. So as part of her private label, Sally Lesser Designs, she is preparing a line of Flamenco costumes for performers as well as Flamenco style crossover dresses for weddings, evening gowns and children's dresses. Lesser is Associate Costume Designer for "One Life to Live" (3 Emmy awards, 8 nominations) and has over 150 stage shows to her credit, including "Return to the Forbidden Planet" (NY and London), the original production of "Little Shop of Horrors" and 25 shows at La MaMa. Day 5: Secrets

My friend Leslie Roybal Geraldes told me she loved the dress and would buy it if it had sleeves. Sleeves, oh no problem! I took a pile of scrap fabric and Frankenstein’d the sleeves! It’s a secret! Can you see where the sleeves were patched? Of course not!!😉

Replica Pat Nixon dress from the Off Broadway play “Checkers”, by Doug McGrath. Mrs. Nixon wore the dress in 1966 for her husband’s infamous speech.

Day 5,
OPENING NIGHT!!

Fitting went well.
With actresses, it’s always “Does this make my butt look big?”, with dancers, it’s always “Is there room for me to lunge?”.
My dancing diva wanted more sweep, volume, vuerte- more skirt! Picture shows one of three added godets.
Pro photos and my dancer’s identify soon! Now time for pre opening night dinner.😊😊😊

Day 4

New day and all went well! Started putting on the ruffles and they look fine! Made the pattern smaller and managed to eke out every thing w the fabric at hand. Ready for my fitting, fingers crossed!🙂

Day 3
The worst!! The fabric store didn’t have enough fabric and couldn’t find the other bolt. Didn’t get to the studio until noon. Spent a long time shortening/straightening the black skirt against the red, trimming it, Perl edging it...Pinned some ruffles on trying to duplicate the placement.
Wow. Why is the black suddenly too long on one side and too short on the other? Why do the ruffles look awful and not even the right shape?

At times like this, you have to walk away and start again fresh in the morning. Tomorrow will be better. It has to be. Tick tick.😒

End of day one, feeling good. Took a pattern off the two dresses and cut out the bodice. 2 layers of poly crepe de chine. The skirt will be poly charmeuse. Nice slippery fabrics! They are actually wonderful quality fabrics from B&J. No Spandex for this dancing diva!!

Assignment:
Take the skirt on the red, and the bodice on the purple and create a new dress in black. And it’s a rush job. And it’s for New York’s biggest Flamenco diva!!! I’m ready!!!
