Japan greets its new year with a timeless tradition of bell ringing, known as “Joya no Kane.” On New Year’s Eve, temple bells around the country are rung 108 times. According to Buddhism, there are 108 worldly desires, and each ring of the bell is a symbolic release, helping us let go of the past and step into the new year with a fresh start. This massive bell takes seventeen monks working in unison to strike, their voices echoing ‘ee hitotsu!’ (one more!) and ‘sore!’ ('now!’), creating a beautiful moment of unity and renewal.
