Imagine growing up in a country that bans music. Not just Taylor Swift, but ALL music. Although banned in their country, members of the exiled Afghan Youth Orchestra put on a wonderful concert last night to remind us all just how important making music is to everyone, and especially to young people. The orchestra was brilliantly conducted by Tiago Moreira da Silva. The evening started with traditional works on drums, rubab, guitar, sitar and harmonium. These instruments combined with the traditional orchestra instruments for a program that included Zohra, the Afghanistan’s all-women Orchestra. Young men joined in and the full Afghan Youth Orchestra performed to a very enthusiastic crowd at Carnegie Hall.

At the end of the concert Dr. Ahmad Sarmast, Founder and Director of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, explained the Taliban ban on music and the orchestra's exile to Portugal, thanking all those who helped them safely leave Afghanistan. Members of the Afghan Youth Orchestra celebrated onstage after their performance as a young woman held up the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan flag, the non-Taliban flag of Afghan resistance. This was a magical ending to Carnegie Hall’s World Orchestra Week.
